Quinta do Vallado Douro Red 2007Sale $19.99 93 pts Wine Spectator 25% Touriga Nacional,20% Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Barroca, and Sousao. 15% aged in oak. Nearly 75% of the Estate-grown grapes came from younger vines (8-to-12 years of age), with the remaining 25% coming from very old parts of the vineyards (vines of 70 years or older). The younger vines, combined with lack of oak, allows for the purity of the fruit to shine through. Don’t get me wrong, this is no wilting flower – there are plenty of round, tannins to bolster the fruit, and an intriguing core of savory, wild herbs and floral notes. The finish just doesn’t quit, lasting over a minute while continuing to excite your palate with more fruit and spice. Want to know just how great a value this is? Note the comment from the Wine Spectator – “tasted twice, with consistent notes.” Basically, at this price, they needed to retaste the wine to make sure they were accurate - $20 don’t normally taste this good!
“This powerful and refined red delivers concentrated flavors of plum, dried cherry and spice. Offers a fine texture, with plenty of savory herbal notes, followed by a long, olive- and smoke-filled finish. Drink now through 2015. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.” WS
“This blend is dark red, with crimson highlights and an intense, mature red fruit nose, with hints of violets and “esteva” (a local Portuguese herb). The palate shows great structure and a full-bodied elegance, with mature, round tannins, leading to a long, persistent finish.” Winery note
