G D Vajra Barolo Albe 2005 91 pts Wine Advocate Sale $31.99 net – Save 25% Absolutely intoxicating aromas of violets and crushed rose petals, cedar and sandalwood spice, and dried black cherries. The rich mouthfeel was the wild and wonderful surprise, though: the tannins are there for structure but mild, sweet, and smooth.
There’s a purity and finesse here, ripe raspberry, cherry, and strawberry fruit, and tingling hint of tar and herbs on the long, silky finish. I had my (first) bottle with grilled lamb loin chops with a simple lemon-parsley-garlic marinade, and darn near cried they played so well together. “The 2005 Barolo Albe caresses the palate with a soft core of perfumed fruit. This generous, open Barolo isn’t likely to be a long-term ager, but it offers tons of class and elegance. The finish is round and impeccably refined. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019.
Vajra is one of Piedmont’s best kept secrets. Here readers will enter a world of sublime hand-crafted, artisan wines of the very highest level. Aldo and Milena Vajra’s passion comes through in spades in these terrific new releases, which I can’t recommend highly enough.” WA This Albe bottling from Vajra is a cuvee of their various vineyards, and shows a style steeped in elegance, if you will, that nowhere else but in Vergne could find its sublime terroir, its own “promised land,” a superb site despite being the occasional target of pitiless hailstorms. Vergne is the highest village in the Commune of Barolo. With vineyards planted to Nebbiolo at heights of 350-400 metres, it sees later ripening than other areas and crus, with the result that its Barolos have always been recognised as quite distinctive: wines with youthfully ample aromas, showing prominent but judicious acidity, generous fruit always lively and crisp, whose primary stylistic signature is their aromatic elegance.
