Bergstrom, Pinot Noir "Bergstrom Vineyard" 2008

Sale $61.99

94 pts Int'l Wine Cellar

Josh Bergstrom is arguably the hottest winemaker in Oregon, garnering critical acclaim from every critical reviewer.  In their reviews of the 2008 vintage, the normally tight-fisted International Wine Cellar rewarded Josh with a rare 94 pt score, making his estate Pinot Noir tied as the highest scoring wine of the vintage!
Uh… if you like Oregon Pinot, you really should not miss this…

Wine Spectator hasn't reviewed yet, but let slip a 94 pt review for the sold out DeLancelotti Vineyard... which IWC rated the same as Bergstrom Vineyard...

“Pure, vibrant aromas of raspberry, red cherry and fresh flowers. Juicy, silky and penetrating, with excellent lift to its red berry and candied floral flavors. At once deep and vibrant, in a strikingly elegant style. Finishes bright and persistent, with an alluringly delicate touch.”

“Josh Bergstrom is now devoted full-time to his own winery, having finally concluded his last consulting contract. He told me that he was thrilled to be able to spend even more time in his estate vines "because that's where the wine is really made." On the subject, all of the Bergstrom estate vines, including the de Lancellotti vineyard, are now Demeter-certified organic. What especially impresses him about the '08s "is their electricity, which gives them immediate appeal but also bodes well for long cellaring." IWC

Also available – we still have access to Josh’s entry-level Cumberland, which we flipped over last month.

Bergstrom Pinot Noir Willamette Valley Cumberland Reserve 2008 – Sale $32.99 net / reg. $44.99 – Save 27% - 91 pts Int’l Wine Cellar -  Whoa! Yep. That’s my note. Whoa! I’ll leave the poetry to the boys below. I just want to emphasize what a killer value this is. I’ve had nothing at this price point from Oregon of this caliber. This wine is more in league with the $50+ offerings we’ve enjoyed. At $33, it is a steal.

[Michael] Right away we got ripe black cherry, raspberry, and strawberry fruit on the bouquet, complimented with incense, violets, and baking spices.  Ripe, lush, darker fruits came out on the palate, shifting to more blackberry and cassis, followed by licorice, smoke, and clove notes.  It’s immediately silky, lush, and savory, with mouthwatering acidity, surprising ready to rock right now.  I’m going to try laying down a few bottles for 2012-2016 drinking, but the temptation to empty them now may get the better of me!

[Schmitty] – I was struck by the swirling, ethereal aromatics on the Cumberland.  Red fruit, wood spices, violets and dark earth all came leaping out of the glass—I couldn’t believe how expressive it was at such a young age.  On the palate, I agree with Klinger—darker elements on the spectrum came to the fore, adding a rich, voluptuous character to a very elegant, feminine Pinot.   Super accessible—this vintage of Oregon Pinot is, in my mind, much like 07 Rhone—opulent and accessible at a young age, but with acidity and structure to spare, giving it lots of longevity… best of both worlds!

“Black raspberry and cherry on the nose, with complicating notes of loamy earth and anise. Fresh and focused on the palate, offering gently sweet red fruit flavors and a late note of licorice pastille. Deep but lively pinot with very good finishing clarity and spicy cut. This is delicious now but will be even better with a couple years' bottle age.” IWC
