Altesino is one of Tuscany’s most iconic estates. The winery is located in Montalcino’s eastern hills, with vineyards surrounding the magnificent Palazzo Altesi, built in the 14h century. Present day owner Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini “the Queen of Brunello” has revitalized this historic estate since purchasing it in 2002. She added two talented winemakers to her team, Simone Giunti and Alessandro Ciacci, and Altesino continues to produce some of Montalcino’s most sought after wines today. Rosso di Altesino is their Super Tuscan blend, a ‘Super Montalcino’ if you will. A blend of 80% Sangiovese Grosso (the Brunello clone) grown significantly in their Castelnuovo dell'Abate vineyards (the golden zone for Brunello production), with 20% Cabernet and Merlot from Pianezzine. Think of this as baby Brunello meets sophisticated Bordeaux. All the fruit is hand-harvested, with the grapes fermented in stainless steel, then aged six to eight months before bottling. There’s so much classic Tuscan appeal here with vibrant ripe berry aromas and a touch of wild herb. A supple exquisitely balanced palate follows, there’s great structure, gorgeous forest fruits and fresh galestro soil minerality on the finish. Perfect for pasta dishes, roasted chicken (or turkey of course), richer pork and barbecued dishes too.
James Suckling: 92 Points
“An attractive nose of minerals, ripe red and blue fruit and touches of violets, black olives and stones. The palate smooth and juicy, with a medium body and lively fruit in the middle. Balanced and focused."
