This is the 2nd highest-rated New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc in the history of the Wine Spectator!
The first? Last month’s Greywacke offer… cause that’s just how we roll…
“So why shouldn’t I just buy the Greywacke?”
For one, it has taken a price increase.
More importantly, the Astrolabe is vastly different from the Greywacke. You may recall, Greywacke was an interpretation of the famous Marlborough style “with the volume turned down.”
Astrolabe has the volume turned up to ELEVEN!
Winemaker/owner Simon Waghorn separately vinifies grapes from three sub-regions of Marlborough. When they are finished, he blends them together for his interpretation of Marlborough. I’ll let him explain, “My style is dry, expressive and elegantly balanced. For me it is about getting a lovely sense of fully developed green spectrum flavours from all these different sites and putting them in a glass in a way that is well-styled and elegant. My Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc always presents with ripe green flavours like passionfruit, blackcurrant leaf and gooseberry. In the palate, it is full and round and finishes dry and lingering.
This is a drier style of sauvignon blanc, acidity kept nicely in balance with the alcohol and the very little residual sugar that is there, so it’s all about how all these things come together to make a pleasurable whole. I craft my wines so that nothing stands out as one singular spike, instead revealing a lovely layering of flavours and aromas that people can keep finding as they spend time savouring the glass.”
And when he says “dry”, he means it. Most NZ Sauv Blancs have 3-4 grams/liter of residual sugar. Astrolabe is less than 1. This lack of sugar makes the wine more vibrant and lip-smacking, mouth-wateringly delicious! Pair with leafy green salads, goat cheese, seafood, fish and more. Oh man, I know what I am making this weekend – Insalata di Mare. Basically, Seafood Salad. Click the pic for a recipe.
Wine Spectator: 94 Points
"Checking all the boxes, this stunning version is fresh and vibrant yet also complex and full of flavor, from toasted green tea and lemon thyme to mouthwatering passion fruit, yuzu and mango. Ends with hints of white pepper, lemon blossoms and sea salt on the long, expressive finish. Drink now."
