In Rioja Alavesa, the most northern sub-region where Bideona operates, other producers have been making a style of red similar to this for over a century, called ‘Cosechero’. Fun, fruity and immediately enjoyable, but lacking any Tempranillo or Rioja Alavesa markers. Enter Bideona and their new unoaked red! Showing both intense drinkability and exuding pure Rioja Alavesa charisma, they call this marvel ‘Cosechero 2.0’ – as in the same but better.
Full of fresh-picked fruit with light-on-its-feet juiciness and balanced with super subtle tannins– this is irresistible! The lack of oak means a focus on the vibrant, cooler-climate fruit, maintaining a suprisingly refreishing finish. This is a relaxed wine to sip by solo, sure, but it’s shows Spring dinner table. Spring vegetables? No-brainer. Pescetarian? Perfect with herb-seasoned fish. Maybe you’re having lamb or ham on Easter? Yes and Yes! I saw a recipe for Clove-Studded Ham, which I sent to my sister to make on Easter, and knew I was bringing this wine to pair.
The smiling faces on the labels are all the viticulturists that contributed fruit to the Mayela from all over Rioja Alavesa. Each box comes with a mix of them. The sublime juice is all the same, but it’s a charming tribute! Like the bobble-heads of wine. Collect them all! The wine may be lighter-bodied, but it has the stuffing to age too. Load up and drink with a different farmer every evening for seasons to come.
