This baby is produced by famed importer Jorge Ordonez’s winery located in the Calatayud region of northeastern Spain. It’s not exactly a well-known region… there are only 15 wineries! And this gem is produced from grapes just outside the region! As such, it can only be labelled Vino de Mesa – “table wine”. But don’t mistake lack of recognition for lack of quality or history. This is where Garnacha is from… and these vines are 35-60+ years old. More importantly, these are some of the highest altitude vines in the region. The cool nights mitigate the hot summer days, giving freshness and vibrancy to the luscious fruit.
Pure joy. That’s my description. If you are wanting serious, austere or anything else, then move on. Nothing to see here… except pure joy.
That’s because this 100% Garnacha is fermented and aged (briefly) in tank to preserve the incredibly kinky aromatics that can only come from Garnacha! Cherries, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries… it’s a veritable berry festival! Like my daughter picking wild raspberries in the woods and coming home with the evidence all over her face. Just deliciousness oozing from your mouth.
