Located in Roa de Duero, about 160 kilometers north of Madrid, Bodegas y Vinedas Valderiz is one of the leaders in organic viticulture in the region. Seventh generation vine grower Tomás Esteban heads the winery today, using vineyards that were originally planted by his father in 1932. Tomás is focused on biodynamics in the vineyards, no herbicides, pesticides, or fertilizers are used on his old bush vines. This 2016 is 100% Tinta del Pais (Tempranillo) from low-yielding 25+ year old vines. Gentle, slow, natural fermentation on native yeasts takes place in stainless steel tanks. Then the wine is aged in barrels (80% French, 20% American, and 60% new) for up to 24 months prior to bottling. This is a big wine, but as with all great Riberas it has incredible complexity and balance. Rich with ripe dark berries and plums, with broody spiced undertones of earth and oak. Really polished and pure on the tongue leading to a long seamless finish. Superb now, but you could easily age for a decade or more.
Wine Spectator: 95 Points
"This velvety red offers generous layers of cherry reduction, espresso, clove and loamy earth notes that are flanked with licorice, graphite and floral hints. Shows freshness and concentration. Drink now through 2039. 5,000 cases made.”
