Only 200 cases produced! That’s 9 barrels! The bodega is another of Raúl’s “fake-it-until-you-make-it” facilities. “The guy who owns it refuses to sell it to me,” Raúl says. “But he also doesn’t charge me rent. It’s very curious.” There is no de-stemmer here, nor would the meager electricity be sufficient to power one, so the fermentations proceed with 100% whole clusters.
Okay… this isn’t 100% Mencia… There’s also a little Caino, Alicante Bouschet and Trousseau… and some white grapes of unknown determination! The vineyard was planted nearly 100 years ago and, well, things happen! Raul says these little “bonuses” add a brightness to the nose and the initial sip – kind of a twist of lemon – both literally and figuratively. Taut red cherry and blueberry flavors follow along with hints of earth – the good stuff that makes you think of taking a walk through the woods… with leaves falling all around and wild mushrooms poking through the soil, adding an earthy sweetness to the air.
A nifty little number that turns and wheels and stops and starts, this is just a kaleidoscope of flavors – fruit, earth and spice. All play a role here and beg, nay scream for food! Mushrooms are a must bridge ingredient… but you can go with everything from a heavier fish like halibut, to pork or chicken. Or, even better, duck breast! Hmm…
"The 2015 A Boca do Demo comes from a single vineyard in the Chantada zone within Ribeira Sacra. The small plot is walled and terraced, planted with ancient vines of mixed varieties. If wines from the Amandi subzone are similar to the Rhône, this is more like Burgundy: terribly elegant, perfumed, insinuating and all about finesse and nuance. The palate is super refined, with great freshness and the acidity better integrated than the other reds. " WA on the 95 pt 2015

“I love the floral and expressive nose of the 2019 A Boca do Demo, which fermented in oak vats and matured in 1,000-liter oak foudre. It's juicy and tasty, quite showy, elegant and nuanced. This has always been my favorite here and continues like that... There are 1,200 bottles.”
