Vignoble Simian has been in the same family since 1920, but the vines were there half a lifetime before them. The family is not called Simian in fact, but Serguier, and their ancestor’s story is a rags-to-riches fairy tale where Mistress Simian names her maid, Marcelle Serguier, her heir! Five generations later, the Serguier’s have expanded the domaine, incorporated organic and biodynamic certifications, and raised extremely certified winemaking descendants in current owners, Jean-Pierre and his son, Florian Serguier.
This classic Rhone blend boasts an average vine age of 70 years and we know old vines makes for deeply flavored wines. The Serguier’s accentuate the lush dark fruit and spicy nuance by unusually fermenting in concrete tanks and aging for 18 months in steel tanks. The result is so bright, silky and lovely. It’s a beautifully original wine.

“A blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah and the rest Cinsault, Mourvèdre, and Counoise, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Le Traversier comes from a mix of clay and sandy soils (the La Bertaude, Cabrières, and Palestor lieux-dits) and was raised all in concrete tanks. Black raspberries, cassis, garrigue, and loads of spice as well as more floral notes emerge from the glass. Deep, rich, full-bodied, and incredibly elegant, it's an awesome wine from this producer that readers will love.”

It's a silky, lushly textured wine with yielding acidity and a touch of cocoa powder anchored by firm, persistent tannins. Enjoyable already the wine should improve through 2028 and hold further.”
