Located between the Sèvre and the Maine, the small village of Navineaux (now Les Avineaux) is the earliest evidence we have of Melon de Bourgogne is the Loire Valley- even before it’s expulsion from Burgundy. A grapevine mentioned in a contract from 1616- that’s enough to make the argument that this is the source of Modern Muscadet.
Ok- that’s the first part of the name. What about the second?
Amphibolite is the metamorphic rock often found in the best Muscadet vineyards- schistose and flaky, wines planted in these kinds of soils have a mineral edge and a distinct concentration in the fruit character.
And that’s really what you want in a Muscadet- concentrated citrus with clean lemon zest and bright acidity, coupled with a saline, mineral tone that refreshes and lifts the palate.
