Le Piane - Boca 2019
Price: $94.99
Sale Price: $75.99
The Boca region is located in Piedmont, Italy, nestled in the foothills of Monte Rosa, the 2nd highest peak in Europe. One of the northernmost, and smallest appellations (only 34 acres), Boca had all but disappeared from the wine map until Le Piane proprietor Christoph Künzli arrived in the late 90s. But after a Tre Bicchieri rating in Gambero Rosso, those “in the know” started to rediscover the region. The northern location, winds from the Alps, glacial lakes and highly acidic, iron-rich soil all combine to produce Nebbiolo-based wines that are high in acid, earthy and long-lived.
There is no better wine of the region than Le Piane’s Boca. Even more, it rivals the greatest you will find from Barolo and Barbaresco. All at a fraction of the price.
Le Piane Description
95 points Kerin O'Keefe
"Violet, hay, wild herb, camphor and sanguine notes recalling rusty iron lift out of the glass on the fragrant 2019 Boca from Le Piane. Linear with racy tension, the youthfully austere palate offers tart red cherry, cranberry, star anise and the same sanguine mineral note from the nose. Taut, refined tannins and vibrant acidity provide the framework and give it an age-worthy structure." KO
Decanter: 93 Points
"Künzli has released the 2019 vintage of his signature wine before the 2018, as the latter needs more time. Alluring aromas of nutmeg, morello cherry and red pepper flakes. Rich mid-palate, there are medium to full tannins and restrained oak notes. Excellent combination of Nebbiolo strength with the spice of Vespolina. The tannins are elegant and there is a subtle note of pepper on the finish. Drinking Window: 2024-2032." - Tom Hyland
