Macanita - Tinto 2019

With his movie star looks and devilish smile, winemaker Antonio Maçanita made quite a splash at Corks for Kids this Fall. My beautiful bride’s first question upon arriving was, "Who is HE?" Then people tasted his wines… whoa… and the line doubled! Sigh… some people are just blessed – good looks and talent! Antonio Macanita returned home to his native Portugal after winemaking stints in Napa, Australia and France, most notably Ch. Lynch Bages.
For this project, he is joined by his equally talented sister, Joana. Although if you ask her, she will claim to be more talented! And who am I to argue? Quick-witted with a formidable tongue, Joana complements Antonio’s irreverence, making them a dynamic duo and rising stars in the wine world.
We’ve been crushing wines from both projects, Fitapreta and Macanita, for years now, but it appears the wine critics are finally catching on. With 90-95 pts reviews pouring in from Decanter, Wine Advocate
The Macanita siblings operate with the Portuguese idea of “Palpite” or intuition when it comes to viticulture and winemaking. With this trust of the land and the natural growth process of the vineyard, they are able to make wines that are imbued with a singular sense of place. They operate on a strictly gravity-fed basis in the winery, to avoid any harsh treatment of the must. All wines are spontaneously fermented with indigenous yeasts. Small parcels of each vineyard are fermented separately to preserve distinct stylistic qualities. These are then blended to achieve a layered, complete picture of the terroir.
Wine Advocate: 90 Points
"The 2019 Tinto is a 55/20 blend of Touriga Nacional and Sousão, with the remaining 25% a field blend from old vines (80+ years), unoaked and coming in at 13.4% alcohol. This is not the most interesting red of this group, but it is reasonably priced in this lineup. It has a bold, fruit-forward demeanor and a real backbone. Most of all, though, it puts that into a precise package with good acidity and a balanced demeanor. On the finish, it has some plums and strawberries mingled together. This is nicely done at a good price. There were 60,000 bottles produced."
