First and foremost, this wine showcases the main red varietals of the Douro- Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz (aka, Tempranillo), and Touriga Franca. No new oak means that they’re on full display. Touriga Nacional, considered Portugal’s finest red grape, offers intense aromas of blackberries and violets and brings structured tannins. Tinta Roriz tempers this enthusiasm with sophistication and delicate red berry flavors. Touriga Franca gives powerful aromas and flavors of mulberries and exotic floral notes.
The balance of tannins and acidity with intense fruit makes this a candidate for aging. View from the Cellar projects a 40-year horizon! At this price, I don’t think I will be able to keep my hands off it for 40 minutes, especially considering how great this wine is for food pairing. The Douro Valley is a culinary wonderland in it’s own right, and if you’re also imagining yourself seated at a beautiful banquet on the banks of the river, I’ve got the dish that will hold you over while you look at flights. Beef stew! Simple dimple!
View from the Cellar: 93 Points
The 2021 Douro Tinto from Filipe Ferreira is crafted from a cépages of sixty percent Touriga Nacional, twenty-five percent Tinta Roriz and fifteen percent Touriga Franca. The wine comes in at 13.5 percent octane this year, which is nicely measured for the Douro. The bouquet is deep, black fruity and complex, wafting from the glass in a mix of dark berries, cassis, saddle leather, cigar wrapper, dark soil tones and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, focused 47 and full, with superb depth at the core, excellent soil signature and grip, ripe tannins and lovely balance on the long and complex finish. The lack of new oak here is quite refreshing and fairly rare for most dry reds from the Douro these days. Like all of Mary Taylor’s producers, this is another simply outstanding value! 2028-2065+.” John Gilman with View From the Cellar
