Patrizia Cencioni’s story is one perseverance and determination. Growing up with family in the Montalcino area she always knew she wanted to make great Brunello but was not handed an estate or winery. So, in 1989 she made the bold decision to purchase a neglected property just 2 kilometers southeast of the village of Montalcino, not far from the prestigious Casanova di Neri estate. Patrizia had a vision for this family farm with an old stone winery at the heart and classic Montalcino soils, a combination of “galestro” (a compacted clay) and volcanic rock. Over the past thirty years she has been involved in every aspect of rebuilding this property, planting vines, expanding the cellars, and redesigning the winemaking facilities. Today Patrizia’s property spans almost 100 acres of Montalcino’s hillsides, and she farms 25 acres of Sangiovese Grosso vines and 15 acres of olive trees along with her two daughters Annalisa and Arianna. This small family run winery is one of the rising stars of the region. These wines are not to be missed.
Cencioni’s Brunello is a total knockout. From 20-30 year old vines planted at elevations of 900-1050 ft, fermented in stainless steel on indigenous yeasts then aged in a combination of French and Slavonian oak barrels for 30 months. Make no mistake about it, this is a big rich powerful wine. It captures the essence of Montalcino superbly. Opening with aromas of dark plum, cherry, cedar, tobacco, and earthy minerals, you know this is going to be a big wine. A full-bodied rich palate follows, ripe tannins delivering impressive structure. Expansive and mouth-coating, with flavors of plum, wild berries, coffee bean, and smoked savory spices leading into a minute long finish that remains refined and bright. I suggest decanting for an hour to really let its beauty shine.
Patrizia Cencioni Description
95 points Kerin O'Keefe
"Violet, dark exotic spice, forest berry and new leather are just some of the aromas you’ll find on the fantastic 2021 Brunello from Patrizia Cencioni. Brimming with finesse and flavor, the palate offers succulent Marasca cherry, licorice, spiced orange peel and crushed mint. It’s young but well balanced, with present but polished tannins and fresh acidity." - Kerin O'Keefe
Jeb Dunnuck: 94 Points
"The 2021 Brunello Di Montalcino pours a medium red hue and benefits from air, opening with an attractive perfume of lavender, cherry cordial, smoky incense, licorice, and orange oil. The palate is medium to full-bodied and inviting, with ripe tannins, refreshing acidity, and a great finish that keeps it hard to resist today. I love this wine, and it should continue to improve over the next decade or more. Drink 2026-2040." - Audrey Frick

"Wild herbs and flowery underbrush come together with crushed strawberries and nuances of sweet sage as the 2021 Brunello di Montalcino evolves in the glass. It is refined and polished in feel, beautifully balanced, with textures of pure silk and depths of ripe red berry fruits. A framework of sweet tannins lingers as the 2021 tapers off long and staining yet harmonious. Beautifully done." - Eric Guido,
Decanter: 91 Points
"On the eastern flank of Montalcino, Patrizia Cencioni runs her eponymous estate with her two daughters. Since 2018, the family has been working with Valentino Ciarla (who also consults at Le Chiuse). Together they have been fine-tuning all aspects of production, with greater precision and freshness showing through. Tobacco, leather and red plum all emerge on the first sniff. A tangle of wild berries and forest floor soak the mid-palate. Firm, chewy tannins are confidently extracted, giving plenty of vigour before tangy acidity lightens everything up."
