Okay… hmmm… most people associate Vinho Verde with cheap, slightly fizzy lemon water… er… “wine”. And, quite frankly, that is what dominates the market.
But Vinho Verde is not a wine. It is a region situated on the southern banks of the Minho River, which demarcates the border with Spain. Specifically, the Spanish wine region of Rias Baixas.
Yes, the same Rias Baizas that is home to the popular Albarino wines. We’ve seen a tenfold increase in sales of Albarino and an increase in average bottle from $10 to almost $22!
The wineries in Vinho Verde have taken notice. In hopes of duplicating their neighbors’ success, wineries have been carefully replanting and regrafting their vines. Paying attention to the specific aspects of each plot, they choose the right grape for that terroir. The result has been a dramatic shift in the quality of their wines.
But they aren’t just duplicating Rias Baixas. While Albarino (known as Alvarinho) certainly plays a part, other grapes often take the starring role. Avesso, Loureiro, Trajadura, Vinhao, Alvarelhao and more are all getting in on the action.
Which makes for some exciting wines!
And a rising tide lifts all boats, which means the entry-level wines have gotten pretty fantastic as well! We will explore the fancier stuff later. But let’s start off with a reintroduction of the region with their most classic wine. Crisp, clean, refreshing and petillant. (fine bubbles.)
A blend of 40% Arinto, 30% Trajadura and 30% Loureiro.
- Arinto – Crisp and mouth-watering. Citrus, lemon and grapefruit.
- Trajadura – Rich in body. Citrus along with apple, pear and peach.
- Loureiro – Pretty, floral zesty - reminiscent of Riesling. Orange and acacia blossom.
The high acidity and bit of bubbles make this wine a food-pairing rock star. Fish tacos, mango salsa, ceviche, sushi… Thai curry… you can Google a bunch of authentic dishes too. But, let’s be honest… the kids are back in school, it’s still blazing hot, and all you want to do is enjoy the last days at the pool before Fall. So grab it up and quaff it down!
