Solo Unico is Mafalda’s study of a single plot of Loureiro grown in gravel and sandy loam soils, just a stone’s throw from the banks of the Lima River. Malfalda gently presses the fruit and ferments and ages in a combination of square concrete vats and concrete eggs. The wine goes through partial malolactic fermentation and is aged 8 months on the lees, creating a strikingly rich textural profile with persistent but delicate acidity, ultra-fine. The 2022 harvest was unusually warm and dry, coaxing a gorgeous floral aromatic profile from these Loureiro grapes. The fruit palate is captivating, citrus and white stone fruits mixed harmoniously with orange blossom and stony minerals. Light in body and thoroughly quaffable at just 11.5% alcohol (you can happily pour yourself another glass or two), yet structured and complex as well. This is an extremely versatile wine. It delights as an aperitif porch / patio pounder and it’s great for food pairings too. Cheese and charcuterie, shellfish (either raw or grilled), brothy fish dishes, and of course bacalhau.
