I’ve talked about the Raats brothers before, specifically how they were pioneers with cultivating Loire varietals in South Africa. Almost exclusively focused on high-quality Chenin Blanc and Cab Franc, brothers Bruwer and Gavin Raats continue to impress critics with their focused, terroir driven wines that showcase incredible depth of flavor.
The Jasper is both a continuation and a deviation for Raats. While it holds true to their pattern of robust, focused reds, this is the only wine they produce that is not either 100% Chenin Blanc or Cabernet Franc. It feels a little off to call it a “Bordeaux Blend” given their focus on Loire varietals, but it’s accurate. Rather an old Bordeaux blend, as we don’t see much Malbec in Bordeaux any longer. Jasper is a blend of primarily Cab Franc, equal chunks of Malbec and Cab Sauv, and then a pinch of both Petit Verdot and Merlot. 16 months in new oak gives it a wonderful structure and emphasizes the robustness on display here, giving everything a wonderful harmonious quality despite the massive flavors.
And yes, this wine wants meat! I have a lot of opinions regarding barbecue. But I’ll defer here to the South African Braai! Literally just grab some proteins, get a fire going, and start cooking surrounded by friends (and wine!)

“Still a baby, the 2021 Red Jasper is a blend of 53% Cabernet Franc, 20% Malbec, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. The nose is tight, with red fruit essences swaying with notions of dusty florals, brown baking spices and spiced plum… possesses gobs of complexity that uncoil on the palate before ending with a long lingering, spicy finish. Drink 2024-2033.” -WA

“It has a lovely blackberry and raspberry scented bouquet with hints of cracked black pepper and iodine, I think, emanating from the Malbec. The medium-bodied palate has grainy tannins, fresh and quite saline, assiduously blended to feel harmonious and focused on the finish. This cuvée retails for around $20 to $25 a bottle in the United States, where sales are booming. If you know better value-for-money, let me know because I'd be damned if I knew of one. Drinking Window 2025 – 2035.” Vinous
