I never get tired of this story… three year's ago, we received an offer for Andrea Franchetti's famed Tenuta di Trinoro, the 2016 vintage, which recently received a perfect 100 pt rating from Antonio Galloni. As you can imagine, even at the price tag it fetches ($250), we have buyers for wines of this nature. But, in a common scenario, in order to access the Golden Egg, we had to purchase 4 times as much of their "entry-level" wine, "Le Cupole."
Rich was ready to balk... "Todd, I don't need two cases of unrated, $30+ Bordeaux Blend from Tuscany."
My response was simple. Dude... have you read the previous vintage reviews? 94 pts from Wine Advocate, who said of the 2016, "a simply beautiful wine, with a full and richly extracted style that delivers power but does not go overboard." Antonio Galloni said the 2016 was "undeniably delicious... a fabulous value... and "bold, in your-face and unapologetically rich."
Rich... 2017 is an outstanding vintage. Andrea Franchetti is a legend. I don't need a review or even a sample to know this wine is going to be stunning. And if we are stuck with it, I will take it and drink it.
Then I moved on... till we were talking about what was going in the Enomatic (remember those days?), and Rich could hardly contain himself... "That Cupole is ridiculous! So delicious! I ordered more even though I didn't need to. Oh my... and..."
I cut him short... "Told ya so..."
So... here we go... your turn. Supply is very limited.
"Le Cupole is one of the best values found in Tuscany." Wine Advocate
“This is a terrific value proposition. The 2019 Le Cupole is a blend of 47% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Petit Verdot. The first vintage was made in 1995, and although these four varieties have been used in the blend since the beginning, the various percentages change according to vintage conditions. This long 2019 growing season was a little more challenging for the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. The wine delivers plenty of rich concentration and ripeness, but there is also a pureness to the fruit that happily underscores its cheerful and informal personality.” WA on 2019
Wine Spectator: 93 Points
“Features fine depth and sappy plum, blackberry and licorice flavors, with spice and mineral accents. Shows a saline element that underlines it all from start through the mouthwatering finish. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2032. 7,900 cases made, 3,000 cases imported.”
Wine Advocate: 93 Points
“The Tenuta di Trinoro 2020 Le Cupole (with the bright pink label) offers terrific value. You get a glassful of sunny Tuscany and rich intensity at an affordable price. The wine is packed tight with black fruit, spice and leather, making for a classic bouquet, especially for a warm corner of Tuscany, off the beaten track, in Sarteano. The blend is 49% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Franc, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot.”
Vinous Media: 92 Points
"The 2020 Le Cupole is a rich, flavorful wine. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, espresso, incense and chocolate are front and center. There's not much subtlety here, but then again I am not sure that is the goal, either. This flamboyant red will be a joy to drink right out of the gate."
