This gorgeous Tavel-like rosato from the heart of Italy has become a store favorite over the past couple of years. 100% Montepulciano d’Abruzzo from 60 year-old vines planted in limestone soil (“White Gold”), hand-harvested from a block of vines that are cooler than the rest of the vineyard. Winemaker Cristiana Tiberio is obsessed with minerality and structure, so to capture higher acidity and expressive aromas that are essential to world-class rose she focuses on the cooler selections of the vineyard to pull that mineral essence into frame. The juice is free-run only – meaning the grapes are not pressed to extract juice. This is another key step – pressed juice has more of the tannic notes from the skins, as well as other less desirable notes from the stems and seeds.
The result is a symphony of fruit and big floral tones, with cherry and blueberry alongside purple flowers and a lovely spice lift. It’ s that right blend of clean, pure fruit and more nuanced earth tones that makes this a perfect summer sipper- simple enough to enjoy on the porch but with enough complexity that you can put it next to anything in season at the farmer’s market!
