The wines of Fronsac were once in demand in the French court, but that was in the 18th Century. With the arrival of Phylloxera and the devastation of France's vineyards, Fronsac went into decline. Subsequently Fronsac saw hard times, as the appellation hides in the shadows of the limelight which focuses on the grand estates of the Médoc, Graves, Pomerol and St Emilion. Fortunately, outside investors have helped a number of properties, and Chateau La Vieille Cure has become the shining star!
With its twenty hectares in one single plot, Château La Vieille Cure appeared on a famous map of the Guyenne region, known as the Belleyme map, dated 1780. The vines grow on a plateau and slopes that are lucky enough to be turned to the south west. The estate runs along the River Isle at a height of 65 meters and not only drinks up the afternoon sun, but also enjoys good drainage. This situation makes the grapes that grow here generously ripe and in perfect condition.
Merlot 74%; Cabernet Franc 22%; Cabernet Sauvignon 4%. "The 2015 La Vieille Cure is exceptional. Rich, ample and creamy, the 2015 offers superb intensity throughout. Dark cherry, plum, menthol, spice and licorice are some of the notes that build into the sumptuous finish. Even with all of its intensity, this modern, racy Fronsac retains terrific freshness and overall energy. There is so much to like. " Vinous
“The 2015 La Vieille Cure has a clean and precise bouquet: black cherries, wild strawberry and subtle floral scents emerging from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent and fleshy tannin. There is impressive weight here. It is very smooth in texture with a figgy, cedary finish that needs to develop just a little more freshness during its barrel maturation. Still, this Fronsac has good potential and I expect it to settle comfortably at the top of my banded score, once in bottle." WA
"LVC made the grade this year with blackberry, mineral and spice aromas and flavors. Walnut skin too. Full body, integrated tannins. Long and beautiful." JS
