Ever since I first tasted Krug’s Grande Cuvee over twenty years ago I have held it in the highest esteem. For me, along with many of my peers and wine industry professionals, Krug’s Grande Cuvee is the wine I open when I want to treat myself or someone special. Every bottle I’ve had has been something memorable, but this 164th edition stands high on a pedestal high above all others. The 164th edition is magnificent, like no other Champagne I’ve had before.
“Krug Grande Cuvee was born from the dream of one man, Joseph Krug (founder), to offer the very best Champagne every single year, regardless of annual variations in climate. Each year, the House of Krug honours this dream with a new Edition of Krug Grande Cuvee: the fullest expression of Champagne. Every glass poured is the fruit of more than 26 years of patience and careful craftmanship.” - Eric Lebel, Krug’s Chef de Caves
Founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug, a visionary, a “man who, long before others, understood that the essence of Champagne is pleasure.” The House of Krug owns two of the most prestigious monopoles in Champagne, Clos du Mesnil and Clos d’Ambonnay, all Grand Cru fruit, only the very best. It was Joseph’s dream to create the most generous expression of Champagne every year, regardless of climatic unpredictability. This is how Krug’s Grande Cuvee was born, and how Joseph’s philosophy has endured with each and every new edition for over 170 years.
Why is Krug’s Grande Cuvee so great you ask? And why is this 164th edition so exceptional? Simply put no other producer is making wine in Champagne with as much top notch fruit, and with such meticulous, painstaking efforts in the winery and cellar. Grande Cuvee contains more reserve wine than any other Champagne out there. This 164th edition is a blend of 127 different wines from 11 different years. The oldest reserve wine in it comes from 1990 (an awesome year for Krug with 97+ pt scores), and the youngest wine, the base of this cuvee, is from the superb 2008 vintage! And in between we have the legendary 1996 and 2002 vintages as well! This cuvee is a blend of approximately 48% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay, and 17% Pinot Meunier. Rich and gloriously fruited, notes of toasted brioche, apple blossoms, yellow peach, honey, ginger, and spiced minerals. Pure and vibrant on the tongue, more stone fruits laced with citrus overtones, an ultra-fine bead, and a long clean bright finish that seems to last for an eternity. Each sip is full of tension, class, and intrigue. Fantastic now (I’ve drunk two bottles already), and it will cellar gracefully for 15-20 years or more.
“As you taste it, notes of toasted bread, hazelnut, nougat, barley sugar and jellied fruits may take you by surprise. You may even taste hints of apples still on the tree, flowers in bloom, ripe and dried fruit, almonds, marzipan, gingerbread, sweet spices and even brioche and honey. You may also notice its exceptional freshness in the mouth, with rich and tangy flavours of lemon and grapefruit enhanced by the subtlety of its fine and elegant bubbles. Krug Grande Cuvée can age beautifully.” - Eric Lebel, Krug’s Chef de Caves
“Krug's NV Grand Cuvée 164 Edition is a total knockout. Based on the 2008 vintage, the 164th Edition shows all the crystalline tension and energy that is such a signature of the year. At times, the 164 reminds me of the 2008 vins clairs I tasted after harvest. The flavors are brisk, delineated and pulsing with energy, while the more oxidative notes that are such a signature of Krug Champagnes are not especially evident. A wine of total pedigree and class, the 164 reminds me of some of the great Grand Cuvées of the 1960s and 1970s I have been lucky to taste over the years. No Champagne lover will want to be without this spectacular, captivating wine.” – Antonio Galloni, 97 pts Vinous Media!
If you’ve never tried a bottle of Krug then this is a great way to start! Been a fan for years? Load up now, this 164th edition is incredible and at this price I don’t expect it to be around for long.
