Here is the deal… a large national chain retailer struck a deal with a family estate in Washington to bottle a private label.
Then, they stuck them with it.
Holding the wrong end of the bag, the winery and supplier have struck a deal with a handful of retailers around the country to move through it. Quickly.
All of which makes for a great deal…
If… if… if… the wine is any good.
Now, of course it is, or you wouldn’t be reading this, right? And it isn’t just me who thinks so… ready for the secret?

91 pts James Suckling / 90 pts Wine Spectator – sort of…
The secret is this wine is made by a well-established Washington State winery. You have probably even drunk some of their wine, as last year we rocked their family-labeled 2016 Cabernet. With 91 pts Wine Spectator, and on sale for $15.99, it represented an incredible deal.
This is basically that same wine in a different label… maybe a few percentage points difference in the blend… but essentially the same wine that rated 91 pts form James Suckling and 90 pts from Wine Spectator.
As much as 45% Off!
The estate lies in the idyllic Horse Heaven Hills appellation, on the same land their family has farmed since 1886. The Dead Ranch Cabernet is a blend of 90% Cabernet, 8% Syrah and 2% Merlot. All the fruit is grown in their sustainably farmed vineyards. Horse Heaven Hills is a haven for top Cabernet too, the vines enjoy long, hot summer days and cool nights, perfect for producing a ripe balanced fruit crop. This is beautiful Cabernet, really classic. With aromas of ripe blackberries and cassis, warm spices, and just a hint of earth. Rich and dark in the glass, and solid and concentrated on the tongue. The structure and depth is really impressive, belying its $15 price point. As Rich commented, having opened a bottle yesterday, “Wow… that is a big old boy…”
More dark berries coat the palate, with some plum adding some juiciness. Medium bodied and smooth with fine round tannins, great mouthfeel and a long velvety finish that seems to last for minutes. Food pairings? Err, burger please! Labor Day is, after all, right around the corner. But you could pair with a more complex meal too, a stuffed leg of lamb or beef short ribs would be great. As good as this wine is now, I bet it will age for at least another 5+ years or more. The Wine Spectator suggests it may age up to 2026 even! It’s one to buy by the case load for sure.
