Brothers Andy and Nick Peay are producing brilliant wines on Sonoma’s wild windswept coast. Their 51 acre estate is situated on a foggy hilltop just 4 miles from the Pacific Ocean. This unique location the key to these world class wines.
If you think California can’t rival the very best of Oregon, think again. If you love Pinot you must try these wines!
The Peay’s West Sonoma Coast vineyards are planted in the far northwestern corner of Sonoma County. Very close to the Ocean, but beyond the first ridgeline some striking climatic impacts take effect. The cold mass of the Pacific creates the inversion layer, here these lower elevation vineyards see much cooler the temperatures than the rest of Sonoma year-round. The hilltop puts them just at the fog line though, cool, but not too cold or wet for growing grapes. The vineyards enjoy cool afternoon breezes and full sunlight through the peak of the growing season. What does this translate to? Longer hangtime, harvest is typically late October/early November. Grapes that spend more time on the vine produce more, flavor, acidity, and balance. The fruit is ripe, but not overripe, with lower sugar content, producing wines with lower alcohol than your average Sonoma Pinot. Way lower in fact, approximately 13% alcohol in these wines. Importantly though, this lower alcohol does not mean lacking in flavor or complexity. These are brilliant Pinots!
There are three wines being offered here. All organically farmed estate grown wines fermented on native yeasts.

I had a bottle of this last night, what a wine! It encapsulates Peay’s style perfectly, a delicate pure wine with sneaky power. A Pinot that is complex and fruit forward, but light on its feet and so elegant. 13.4% alcohol, so very easy to drink. Perhaps too easy!
“A brilliant wine, Peay's 2017 Pinot Noir Estate Ama offers an explosion of sweet red/purplish berry fruit, floral notes and spice, all with a hint of blood orange-infused acidity that gives the wine vibrancy. The 2017 Ama is wonderfully bold and luscious, and yet remains light on its feet. A striking wine from Peay.” - VM
“Medium ruby-purple, the 2017 Estate Pinot Noir Ama bursts with a deep well of aromas: cranberry sauce, burnt orange peel and aniseed are accented by notes of oolong tea, forest floor, iron and iodine. In the mouth, it's medium-bodied, broody, concentrated and layered with a long, flavorful finish. This is a bigger, bolder and spicier version of Ama that offers immediate drinkability straight out of the gate with its bright freshness and bold flavors, but will age gracefully in the cellar for another 5-7 years. 550 cases were made.” - WA

“The 2017 Pinot Noir Estate Scallop Shelf is distinguished by its bright, focused personality and energy. As it often is, the Scallop Shelf is a wine of reserve and tension, showing plenty of savory and mineral character and less overt fruit than some of the other wines in the range. The 2017 is likely to require at least a few years to come into its own, but it is super-impressive.” – VM
“The 2017 Estate Pinot Noir Scallop Shelf is a beautiful wine with delicate aromas of fragrant earth, bergamot, saline, iodine and aniseed. In the mouth, it’s medium-bodied, uber silky and concentrated with broody, spicy, fruits, seamless freshness and a very long, layered finish. 550 cases produced.” - WA

A step up from their Cep. A little finer and more nuanced, really expands in the glass and will age gracefully.
“The 2018 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) is a stellar appellation-level wine from Peay. Sweet red cherry, red plum, blood orange, mint and exotic spice notes infuse the 2018 with striking layers of nuance. The Sonoma Coast Pinot, all from the estate, really overdelivers within its peer group, and outside too. It is such a gorgeous and alluring wine.” – VM
“The 2018 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast is very expressive, with warm blackberries, cranberry sauce, blood orange, black tea leaves, forest floor and an undercurrent of dark spices and earth. Medium-bodied and concentrated, it offers Goldilocks ripeness and angostura-laced flavor layers, finishing long and seamlessly fresh. 1,450 cases produced.” – WA Supply is limited.
