(3 bottles) La Petite Lune Blanc 2018 - No review – 2016 was 91 pts James Suckling - 50% Sauvignon Blanc / 50% Semillon. Aromas of peaches and apricots give way to flavors of the same along with snappy citrus flavors and a hint of tropical mango and passion fruit. The Semillon makes for a smooth, round mouthfeel, held together by the Sauv Blanc’s inherent acidity. The yin and yang nature of these grapes is on full display here. Delicious on its own, this truly shines with food – fish and seafood dishes being particularly delicious! “Wake up world, here’s a dry white Bordeaux that is enormously refreshing and stunning value for money. Bright apples and pears leap out at you. Juicy and rather sleek palate with a super clean, long finish. A blend of 50 per cent sauvignon and 50 per cent semillon.” JS on the 2016
(2 bottles) Domaine du Clos des Aumônes Vouvray Sec (Dry) 2017 - Ok… so let’s get to it… “Sec” means DRY. So if you had other visions of Vouvray in your head, let them go! This is what we call a “wow” wine, bursting from the glass with gorgeous, succulent aromas of peach, Asian pear, ginger, and rosewater. There’s a hint of smokiness and a gorgeous minerality at play, bringing clarity and a glorious expression of terroir in every sip. A vibrant, mouthwatering acidity adds structure and finesse to the whole package, contributing to the dry finish and the food-friendly nature of the wine. What makes this truly special, what sets it apart from the run-of-the-mill Vouvray, is the dramatic complexity and the beautiful interplay between the Chenin Blanc fruit and that earthy, smoky, minerality. If you love white wine, this is not a wine to pass up!
(2 bottles) Jolie Muscat Sec (Dry) 2019 - 100% Muscat fermented dry. This is just super cool and intriguing… wild aromas of rose petals, orange blossoms and pink grapefruit jump from the glass. But on first sip, those explosive aromas are tamed… there is an elegant restraint to this wine. It’s a super sexy sportscar, all right, but it never veers out of control, hugging tightly to each curve and turn with ease. You can feel the power underneath, and occasionally the engine roars, then downshifts as you settle back into the drive. Minerality and vibrant acidity are the balancing factors here, and make for an incredible food match. I paired with grilled pork chops, and it more than had enough power to stand up. It would be divine with Indian or Thai food… takeout night!
(1 bottle) Nortico Alvarinho 2019- Alvarinho is the Portugese name for Albarino, a grape that needs little introduction to our customers, who have been quaffing the Spanish version for years. Is it possible the best versions have been "hidden" away just over the border in Portugal, growing in small jardins (gardens) on the south bank of the Minho River? One sip of this gem, and you'll be thankful our friends at Ole Imports took a turn south one day... 100% Alvarinho from small garden plots with vines planted as far back as 1910! This delicious little white is fresh and vibrant, with aromas of peach, lemongrass and passion fruit. It’s bright with stone fruits and has plenty of complexity, with crisp stony minerals and zippy acidity. A great porch sipper, perfect for green salads and fresh shellfish. Or sit on the porch and quaff it down with some cornbread and butter – just like they do in Portugal! Seriously, that’s the traditional food – maybe we’re all just Portugese at heart down here in the South!
(1 bottle) Pazo de Señorans Albariño 2019 - 91 pts Wine Advocate - Grapes from these 20-50 year-old vines are hand-harvested in small crates, then quickly transported to the winery for crushing, in order to preserve the bright aromatics and delicate floral notes that are synonymous with Albarino. Malolactic fermentation is blocked to ensure bright, zingy acidity. Don’t let all that zippy citrus fruit fool you, for beneath it all is a darn complex wine that changes throughout the consumption of the bottle! Of course, if you are inviting friends over, you are going to need more than one! What to pair with? Well, click here for recipes including Roasted Beet and Green Apple Salad with Honey Mustard Dressing, Kale, Apple and Manchego Cheese Salad with Tahini Vinaigrette, Roasted Radish Salad with Crème Fraîche Dressing, and Sole with Albariño Sauce. Or just go super simple – fresh mussels steamed with white wine, butter and the fresh herb of your choice! And plenty of crusty bread to sop it all up!
(1 bottle) Riverbench Estate Chardonnay 2018 - 91 pts Vinous / 90 pts Wine Spectator - “The 2018 Chardonnay Estate Grown is a delicious wine to enjoy on the young side. Lemon oil, white flowers, marzipan mint and white pepper are all nicely lifted in an airy, transparent wine. Bright saline accents give energy and verve, while there is good depth to the fruit. Saline underpinnings perk up the finish nicely. Subtle and understated, the Chardonnay is a terrific introduction to the vintage. Best of all, the 2018 offers superb quality for the money.” Vinous
(2 bottles) Itsasmendi Txakoli (Cha-ko-lee) 2019 - 90 pts Wine Advocate - This is most decidedly NOT fizzy. It’s delicious… and ridiculously good with oysters, razor clams and any fresh seafood known to man. And fun. And tasty. Just not fizzy. Lemon drops and grapefruit… citrus and floral… super vibrant acidity and low-ish alcohol (12.7%). And it doesn’t need to be drunk in the next six weeks… it will drink well for another 2-3 years. Kind of serious and all… “Itsasmendi was created by a group of friends, many of which work or have worked in the winery that functions like a small cooperative. They have a total of 37.5 hectares of vineyards in different villages in the Bizakiako Txakolina appellation, mostly local grapes but also some Riesling that has been there for 30 years now. The diversity of vineyards means they have three different weeks of ripening/picking, which is used as a guide for the style of wines. Their eponymous 2019 Itsasmendi is a blend of approximately equal quantities of Hondarrabi Zuri (Gros Corbu) and Hondarrabi Zuri Zerratia (Petit Corbu) with 12.7% alcohol, a low pH and notable acidity, from a vintage they consider very good, up there with 2015. The vines were planted from 1990 on different soils, fermented separately (there might be up to three weeks difference in ripening), and some lots matured with the lees for a short time. It is citrusy and floral. The palate is solid, seamless, balanced and tasty, with a notable salty finish.” WA
