Not far from the driest desert in the world, the Atacama, and closer to the equator than almost any other wine region, this is a dry, warm region beyond the traditional latitudes associated with winegrowing. Vineyards here, however, lie within just miles of the Pacific Ocean, whose climate-tempering power has created an unusually favorable zone for growing wine grapes. Coastal fog cools these vineyards, and the extremes of warm days and cool nights provides the right mix for balanced grapes. Throw in porous, weathered soils of limestone and you have the perfect recipe for dynamite Sauvignon Blanc.
Vina Tabali’s 2019 Talinay Sauvignon Blanc is a stunning example of the heights these Sauvignon Blancs can reach! From a single estate site – the Talinay vineyard - this is elegant and mineral-laden in a way that is profoundly reminiscent of the top estates of the Loire valley, notably those in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. Generous and aromatic on the nose, with beautiful notes of chalk, white flowers, green apple, tarragon, fresh-sliced jalapeno, and lime; the palate follows with more citrus and mineral, and a long, refreshing finish. This is beautifully balanced, with just a touch of roundness on the mid-palate and a ripe acidity creating an impression of weight, while the minerality and zesty citrus fruit retain that zippy Sauvignon personality. Absolutely gorgeous. “The 2019 Talinay Sauvignon Blanc is only 12.5% alcohol and has almost insane acidity even in a slightly warmer year like 2019. It fermented at low temperature, 11 to 15 degrees Celsius, with a specific yeast and was kept in stainless steel until bottling. This is tight and serious, a little closed at first and not very aromatic, but it has an electric palate with big bones and more meat than the Vetas Blancas. It has power to stand up to almost any food and all the ingredients for a long and positive development in bottle. This has lower alcohol than ever, and the herbal character has not increased. I'd like to see this in a blind flight with top some Sancerre. Incredible Sauvignon Blanc!" Wine Advocate Pair this with fresh seafood - especially oysters, as well as soft cheeses and fresh vegetables. An elegant salad of bitter greens like arugula or watercress along with herbed goat cheese and tomatoes would be a phenomenal match.
