92 pts James Suckling – sort of…
Ok... you may recognize the label... it is the sibling wine of the Dead Canyon Cabernet Sauvignon we offered last month. And you may recall that I said it was my Red Wine Buy of the Year... but I did qualify that by saying "So far..."
Because I had already ordered this one. And I like it more. But I knew Cabernet was going to be an easier "sell", so I wanted to expose everyone to the wine before I brought out this killer... So here we go. The secret is this wine is made by a well-established Washington State winery. You have probably even drunk some of their wine, as last year we rocked their family-labeled 2016 Cabernet. With 91 pts Wine Spectator, and on sale for $15.99, it represented an incredible deal. The Cab we offered was basically that same wine in a different label… maybe a few percentage points difference in the blend… but essentially the same wine that rated 91 pts form James Suckling.
This is made from the same fruit that goes into a wine James Suckling rated 92 pts. But the blend is different. The rated version contained 40% Merlot and only 4% Cabernet. This gem ups the ante with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Merlot to go along with 50% Syrah,, 8% Malbec, 3% Petit Verdot, 2% Mourvedre. More Cabernet, less Merlot, and more Syrah... I'm no winemaker, but even I can envision that tasty treat!
And a treat it is. I will say it again... while not super popular, Syrah, Cabernet and Merlot make a blend that is to die for! Aromas of blackberries and blueberries explode from the glass with notes of plums, currants, cherries along with hints of smoke and vanilla. The Cabernet really adds some backbone, and the wine finishes smooth with fine round tannins, great mouthfeel and a long velvety finish that seems to last for minutes. Food pairings? Just about any protein tossed on the grill would be amazing. And the weather is getting cooler, which means braising time! Stew and short ribs are on the top of my list! And as good as this wine is now, I bet it will age for at least another 5+ years or more. It’s one to buy by the case load for sure.
