This gems hails from the Tuscan coastal area called the Maremma, where a stream of the famed galestro soil of Brunello di Montalcino runs through the heart of the region. At a lower altitude, and a little further south, the temperature in Maremma runs a bit warmer, allowing not only for fuller ripeness of the Sangiovese grape, but for use of late-ripening grapes like Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Hmm…the power of Bordeaux varietals like Cab…plus the dark fruit of Syrah and Merlot…combined with classic Tuscan earthiness…no wonder these are some of the most sought-after bottlings in wine world! You may not be familiar with the region, but surely you know some of its most famous offspring - Tignanello, Ornellaia and Sassicaia. These legendary wines broke the mold for what Tuscan wine could be, and put the swampy region of Maremma on the world map!
The legendary Amarone producer Tommasi took notice, and the family purchased 163 acres of land there in 1997. Rampicollo, roughly translated as “neck-breaking” in English, was inspired by the backbreaking labor required to farm in the volcanic, Tufo-rich soils of the area. Lucky you - all you have to do to enjoy is pop the cork!
60% Sangiovese and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon the single-vineyard Rompicollo. 12 months aging in huge Slavonian oak casks. Aromas of sweet cherries and blackberries explode from the glass, giving way to a rich, dark wine filled with spice and flecked with black pepper notes. The Cabernet's structure is felt on the long, mineral-infused finish. This is a deceptive wine - upon opening it is deliciously accessible, begging to be quaffed with antipasto or a simple pasta dish. But, with air, the Cabernet's structure comes fore, giving the wine more weight and depth. Hmm... fire up the grill perhaps? Pork chops, brushed with balsamic vinegar and rosemary... some little fingerling potatoes... hmmm...
" Aromas of blueberries, blackberries and flowers following through to a full body with firm and chewy tannins. A long and flavorful finish." JS "The black cherry and blackberry fruit in this red makes an immediate impact, ushered along by lively acidity. Harmonious and enjoyable for the lush, ripe flavors. Drink now through 2023. "WS
