“Hébrart’s wines have a broad appeal: if you like to think about your wines, they’re intellectually engaging enough to satisfy you; on the other hand, if you’re just looking to drink, they’re simply delicious.” Peter Liem, Champagneguide.net. Liem is the world’s leading authority on all things Champagne – he literally wrote the book on it! And I couldn’t agree more him more when it comes to Hébrart. Since taking over his family’s winery in 1997 Jean-Paul Hebrart has taken this small estate from strength to strength, and is now producing some of the most compelling wines anywhere in the region. Hebrart farms 14 hectares of vines on 65 different sites spread across 6 villages. Annual production at Hebrart across all of their cuvees is still just 5800 cases. At $50-$55 bottle these wines rival other Champagne houses at more than double the price. Whether you’re an avid collector or just an appreciative drinker of fine Champagne, they’re not to be missed. There are three wines being offered here. Marc Hébrart Premier Cru "Sélection" Brut NV - $54.99 net (mix & match 3 or more bottles - $49.99) - 92 pts Wine Spectator / 92 pts Wine Advocate / 91 pts Vinous Media - 60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay from 40+ year old vines in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Avenay Val d’Or, and Bisseuil. All estate grown sustainably farmed 1er Cru vineyards. Fermented and aged in stainless steel and aged for 48 months prior to release. “The latest rendition of Hébrart's NV Brut Premier Cru Sélection, disgorged earlier this year, is derived largely from Mareuil-sur-Ay, supplemented by some 13% from Chouilly. Offering up aromas of citrus oil, white flowers and fresh pastry, it's medium to full-bodied, with good concentration and structure in a charming format, concluding with an elegantly chalky finish.” - WA “A sleek Champagne, mouthwatering and refined in texture, offering a creamy, well-meshed blend of crème de cassis, toast point, crystallized honey and lemon curd.” - WS
Marc Hébrart Premier Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut NV - $54.99 net (mix & match 3 or more bottles - $49.99) - 92 pts Vinous Media / 92 pts Wine Advocate / 92 pts Wine Spectator - 100 % Chardonnay (obviously), there’s a lot of Grand Cru fruit in this wine too. Up to 15%, from Oiry and Chouilly , and 85% Premier Cru from Mareuil-sur-Aÿ (which many consider should now be classified as Grand Cru given how close in quality the vineyards are here compared to Aÿ). The base here (70%) is 2014, an excellent vintage. “The NV Brut Blanc de Blancs is rich, tropical and racy, all of which give it considerable appeal. One of the most overt wines in this range, the Blanc de Blancs is decidedly open-knit and radiant, with real substance that carries through to the expressive, supple finish. The blend is 70% 2014, 20% 2013 and 10% 2012.” – VM “The latest iteration of Hébrart's NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru is lovely, bursting with aromas of Meyer lemon, green apple, brioche and subtle hints of blanched almond. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and seductive, with ripe acids, a youthfully frothy but incipiently fine mousse and a sapid, vinous finish that belies this bottling's easy charm. Not only is this a terrific wine, it's a terrific value. “ – WA
Marc Hébrart Premier Cru Brut Rose NV - $54.99 net (mix & match 3 or more bottles - $49.99) - 92 pts Wine Spectator / 91 pts Vinous Media “The NV Rosé is a very pretty, inviting wine. Silky in feel, with lifted, floral aromatics, Hebrart's Rosé is delicious on its own, but also has the pedigree to drink beautifully at the dinner table. The suave, silky style is especially inviting. The blend here is 55% Chardonnay, 38% Pinot Noir and 7% still Pinot. Dosage is 6.5 grams per liter.” – VM “Firm and focused, this mouthwatering rosé is lightly chalky in texture, with an integrated range of white peach, pink grapefruit sorbet and blanched almond. A briny hint of oyster shell cleans the lingering finish.” - WS |
