This is classic California Chardonnay at it’s very best. 100% barrel fermented in 1/3 new French and American oak. It’s gorgeously aromatic with tangerine, honeysuckle, white flowers and peach. It’s richly textured and smooth with classic butter and caramel apple notes, from 100% malolactic fermentation, and 100% sur-lie ageing. Yet it remains bright and focused with wet stone minerals, and refreshingly bright acidity.
The secret to this wine is in the vineyards. Located in the Edna Valley, the Wolff Vineyard, along with this year’s Paragon and Stoller Vineyards, are planted with 40+ year old chardonnay vines, grown in close proximity to the Pacific Ocean. These cool coastal vineyards produce grapes that ripen at an almost glacial pace. Yields in 2017 were tiny, where the crop was less than two tons per acre (California average for Chardonnay is four tons per acre). The fruit therefore is deeply flavorful, yet retains the mouthwatering acidity that leaves you coming back for more.
In fact, this wine almost drinks like a classy Chassagne Montrachet, with powerful ripe apple and stone fruits, flinty mineral acidity, a truffle like earthiness, and a rich, creamy hazelnut finish. Only it delivers for a fraction of the price of those Burgundies!
“The 2017 Edna Valley Chardonnay opens with wonderful aromas of honeycomb, orange blossoms, saline, crushed shell and loads of baked apple and quince with an earthy undercurrent. The palate is medium-bodied, satiny and intense, with seamless freshness on the finish, which lingers with honeyed notions." WA
This is one of my favorite wines to pour for guests at my house. Even those that say “I don’t like Chardonnay”, always finish “But I like this one!”
