KOSTA BROWNE RUSSIAN RIVER PINOT NOIR 2018 - $94.99 net - 95 pts Jeb Dunnuck / 93 pts Wine Spectator - Winery note: The vineyards we source form lie in both the southern portion of the appellation and in the northern true coastal zone. In the southern area, the Petaluma Wind Gap and the San Pablo Bay drive cooler temperatures and provide us with deep flavors and richly textured wines. The vineyards from the coastal reaches contribute savory and spice characteristics that we love as well as great structure and poise. This year, the cooler sites such as Marshall and Balletto were able to have long hang times and were the last to be picked. The fruit had excellent development of tannins and dark, rich fruit profiles. Blackberry and raspberry complemented the great depth and long finish. “Starting off the Pinot Noirs, the 2018 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley was mostly destemmed and brought up in 31% new French oak. Its ruby/purple hue is followed by a wonderful bouquet of black cherries, darker raspberry, spice, and hints of earth and forest floor. It's a darker, spicy Russian River Valley effort that's medium to full-bodied and has terrific balance, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It shows the purity and class that now defines this estate. It's well worth seeking out and is going to keep for at least a decade.” - JD
KOSTA BROWNE SONOMA COAST PINOT NOIR 2018 - $94.99 net - 94 pts Jeb Dunnuck / 93 pts Wine Advocate - Winery note: Our goal is to create a wine that showcases the essence of this magical appellation. This year, it was the latest harvest in the last five years. But, no matter the vintage, there is often a recognizably full mouthfeel and texture to the wines from the area - a common thread to the components of this blend. The round, spherical entry showcases the bramble and black cherry notes of this wine. A totally complete Pinot Noir. “Brought up mostly in French oak, with a small amount in concrete, the 2018 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast has that classic Sonoma Coast pretty red fruit-driven style as well as subtle white flower, spice, and even a kiss of minerality. It's beautifully balanced and medium-bodied, with an elegant, ethereal style that still has solid structure. It will drink well for a decade.” - JD
KOSTA BROWNE CERISE VINEYARD PINOT NOIR 2017 - $149.99 net - 94 pts Wine Spectator / 92 pts Wine Advocate - Winery note: Over the past quarter-century, the Anderson Valley has emerged as the source for some of California’s most distinctive wines, and Cerise as one of the valley’s most preeminent vineyards. Rising from 587 to 1,620 feet, its steep, unforgiving terrain results in thought-provoking wines that combine a rustic spirit with stunning energy and opulence. Pinot Noir blocks sit on the eastern side of the valley, facing west, 16 miles from the coast. There is not a single block on flat ground. Carefully harvested over five weeks from vineyard blocks ranging in elevation, this is a beautifully complex and cerebral wine. There is a freshness of bright cherry and strawberry aromas, underscored by subtle notes of vanilla bean and herbes de Provence. On the palate, a sleek acidity and fine tannins add structure and tension to the enticing berry and spice flavors, drawing the wine to a polished finish. “Vibrant, offering concentrated cherry flavors that feature rich pastry notes, backed by firm tannins and powerful acidity. Mineral and spice details show on the restrained, pure-tasting finish. Drink now through 2025. 2,000 cases made.” - WS
KOSTA BROWNE KEEFER RANCH PINOT NOIR 2018 - $129.99 net - Winery note: Planted in 1996, and featuring an array of elite clones, the dry-farmed Keefer Ranch is located in the coolest part of the Russian River Valley, where wind and fog lengthen the growing season and produce one of our most refined and graceful Pinot Noirs. We began working with this site in 2005, in collaboration with the legendary Marcy Keefer. In the winery, we used an array of fermentation vessels to showcase different aspects of this remarkable vineyard. The resulting wine offers strawberry, rhubarb and boysenberry flavors that are fresh and precise, with plush tannins and radiant acidity adding to this wine’s elegant expressiveness.
KOSTA BROWNE GAP’S CROWN PINOT NOIR 2018 – $129.99 net - Winery note: Gap’s Crown is considered by many to be one of the best representations of what the Petaluma Gap AVA, the southern component of Sonoma Coast, is all about. Since we began working with this site in 2006, its meteoric rise into the pantheon of great Pinot Noir vineyards has been extraordinary. Sweeping vineyards with dramatic elevation changes and clonal variety define this exemplary site. Each year, this Pinot Noir dazzles with its stunning purity and lush flavors—and 2018 is no exception. From its mouthwatering tension to its seductive, flowing flavors of blueberry, blackberry pie, and honeycomb, this is classic Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. To capture the site’s vibrancy, the majority of the wine was fermented in stainless steel, with a small portion aged in concrete to enhance the wine’s irresistible mouthfeel. |
