Because you were wondering, the name of this vineyard, “Roserock”, came from William Hill who planted it and thought the red soils of the Eola-Amity Hills reminded him of his home state of Oklahoma’s state rock, the “Rose Rock” (pictured below) . It’s those same red soils that give this wine it’s defining grace and elegance. Domaine Drouhin purchased the Roserock property in 2013, already knowing it’s potential since they previously purchased fruit from its vineyards to go into other DDO wines. With the vineyard purchase, they decided to make a completely unique label apart from the standard Domaine Drouhin wines. Pinot lovers everywhere should be really glad they did, too! I like to say wines are either a chore to drink or a pleasure to drink and for under $30, you WILL NOT find a more pleasurable Pinot! Loads of bright, ripe fruit, silky smooth tannins… it has an almost “candied” consistency without being sweet at all. Serve it at the ideal 55-60 degrees and this baby will absolutely sing in the glass!!!
James Suckling- “This has a savory and stony feel with a strong, floral thread, as well as dark cherry and plum notes to the nose and palate. The texture is sturdy and composed with quite succulent tannins and a stony feel to the finish. Drink over the next six years.”
Wine Advocate- “Pale to medium ruby-purple, the 2017 Pinot Noir opens with gobs of violet, blueberry coulis, boysenberry preserves, spiced cranberry sauce, stones, red currant jelly and an earthy undercurrent—so layered! The light to medium-bodied palate is silky and spicy, gaining intensity in the mouth, with a grainy frame, seamless freshness and a long, spicy finish.”
Vinous - “Shimmering red. A complex bouquet evokes fresh red berries, candied flowers, smoky minerals and baking spices. Juicy, subtly sweet and lively on the palate, offering spice-tinged bitter cherry, raspberry and floral pastille flavors that turn deeper as the wine opens up. Closes spicy, focused and impressively long, with well-knit tannins contributing gentle grip.”
