"For Krug, the year 2006 gave birth to a great and classic Krug Champagne. Krug 2006 is generous, intense in aromas on the palette, without any excess, with an ending leaving a sensation of greatness and distinction. For the final blend, the selected wines were those best exhibiting the unique, silky roundness of the year with a good structure and length. Pinot Noir constitutes almost half (48%) of the blend, with the majority coming from plots in Montagne de Reims Nord, Sud and Les Riceys. Ripe and full-bodied Chardonnays (35%) add roundness and opulence while Meuniers (17%) from Leuvrigny and Sainte-Gemme bring tension and length. The generous aromatic and expressive profile of Krug 2006 comes after 12 years in the cellars, gaining in balance and finesse." – Eric Lebel, Chef de Cave
“Krug's superb 2006 Brut, which will be released this year, numbers among the vintage's high points, unfurling in the glass with a complex and expressive bouquet of tarte tatin, warm biscuits, ginger, honeycomb, dried white flowers, smoke and toasted nuts. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, broad and textural, with a fleshy attack that reflects the warm vintage but segues into a beautifully vibrant palate that's deep and surprisingly reserved, displaying superb definition, delicately chalky structure and a long, lively finish. While this is a powerful vintage Krug, it's also beautifully balanced and will give immense pleasure for decades.” – WA
“A stunner, with mouthwatering vibrancy and focus married to all of the opulence of a great 2006 Champagne. Richly fragrant, offering nutmeg, cardamom, jasmine, lemongrass, espresso and grilled nut notes enmeshed in a core of black currant and tangerine fruit flavors. Beautifully creamy and complex, this glides across the palate on the long, lasting finish. Drink now through 2030. “ - WS
Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 2008

We all know Veuve Clicquot. Their “yellow label” non-vintage champagne is one of the most recognized wines in the world. Their vintage Brut and Rose 2008’s have become store and customer favourites. The Grande Dame is their crown jewel though, an ode to Madame Clicquot herself, made only in the very best vintages with premium fruit selected from the chateau’s top Grand Cru vineyards. In 2008 Champagne saw an almost perfect vintage conditions. A wet cool spring filled the water table nicely, and a long cool and dry summer followed. These cooler months were particularly kind to Pinot Noir, this thin skinned grape is hard to grow, especially in Champagne, France’s coldest wine region. Clicquot had an exceptional harvest, with a bevy of beautiful Pinot Noir, they picked perfectly ripened fruit with great acidity. The chateau compares the super 2008 vintage with their now legendary vintages such as 1995, 1985, and 1979. Having just had a bottle of the 1995 LGD earlier this year, I might say this 2008 is actually better!
A blend of 92% Pinot Noir (from Grand Cru sites in Ay, Ambonnay, Bouzy, Verzy, and Verzenay), with 8% Chardonnay (from Le-Mesnil-sur-Oger) this is the best La Grande Dame I’ve ever had. So exotic and enticing on the nose. Luxurious marzipan and brioche notes intermixed with apricots, Asian pear and toasted almonds. The mousse and refinement on the tongue is incredible too. Fine beads of bubbles weave delicately through more juicy stone fruits, coating the mouth with silky fresh fruit and mineral laced goodness. The flavours seem to persist for minutes, begging for just one more sip… Rich enough to pair with all manner of foods (I drank it with fried chicken steamed buns and pork belly dumplings), but still wonderfully elegant and impeccably balanced. You could cellar this stunner for another 20+ years, but I know I’m going to drink at least another couple of bottles before the end of the year!
“An elegant Champagne, powered by a sculpted frame of acidity and minerality, this wears the refined, lacy mousse and well-meshed flavors of black currant, lemon curd, toast and marzipan like finely tailored clothing. Fresh and lasting, with hints of spice and smoke on the finish. Disgorged August 2016. Drink now through 2033.” WS
"A classic, slow-maturing year picked into October. It's a pale, pristine hue - a beautifully assembled mix of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Aÿ, Ambonnay, Bouzy, Verzy, Verzenay and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, combining saline-wrapped orchard fruits with great Pinot Noir subtlety yet strength. THE aperitif Champagne, but also try with sea trout."Decanter |
