Mortet’s wines are often spellbinding creations, thrilling wines that instantly seduce with their seamless texture, filigree tannins and beguiling purity of fruit.”-Neil Martin, Vinous
“Arnaud Mortet’s rise is one filled with tragedy and triumphs, leading to his current position as one of the unquestioned superstars in all of Burgundy. Arnaud’s late father, Denis Mortet, was an iconic figure . Arnaud worked with his father from 1999-2006, until Denis’ untimely passing. Once in charge, the reputation for elite farming that the Mortet name was known for was taken to an even higher level. Arnaud deftly evolved the style of the wines, significantly reducing new wood, lessening the level of extraction, and fine-tuning his vinification to a point where they are now more elegant and chiseled than in the past.
In 2016, Arnaud was fortunate to take on the opportunity to work with the entire holdings of a single domaine in Gevrey-Chambertin, where the owner was retiring. He and his sister Clémence manage, farm and vinify these plots using the exact same team and winery as that of Domaine Denis Mortet. Nothing separates these wines from those under the Denis Mortet label, beyond the legal need to change the name to simply “Arnaud Mortet” for wines made from these new parcels. This exciting new “domaine in all but name” allows Arnaud to create more benchmark wines, with remarkable definition and texture, from a wider array of Gevrey’s finest terroirs. “ importer note
Arnaud Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin “Ma Cuvee” 2018
Sale $79.99
91-93 pts Vinous – “The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Village comes from four hectares of old vines worked by Arnaud Mortet himself. It has a crisp, focused bouquet, quite mineral-driven, with so much freshness. The very well-defined palate features pure red and black fruit tinged with brown spice. Silky-smooth on the finish, this feels very complete and harmonious. Superb.”
90-92 pts Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy – “The vineyards for this cuvée are at the southern end of Gevrey: Epointures, Jouise, Champs Chenys, typically on gravelly soil. Medium density of purple, mostly old vines, a lighter nose when tasted after the Denis Mortet Mes Cinq Terroirs, but pretty, with some of the strawberries typical of this end of the village. Indeed it has a real sense of elegance, supported in youth by a fair covering of new oak which will soon blend in.”
Arnaud Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin “Cuvee de Tres Vieilles Vignes” 2018
Sale $99.99
93-95 pts Vinous – “The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes comes from three parcels of extremely old vines, one plot up to 120 years of age. Despite a little reduction, this is very intense, offering darker fruit than the regular Gevrey Village. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent red fruit on the entry laced with blood orange, fine tannins and a compact but quite sustained finish. A hint of fresh fig appears on the aftertaste. Superb.”
91-93 pts Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy – “From 80 to 120 year old vines in En Champs, Combes du Dessus, and Aux Echezeaux. Thirteen barrels have been produced from just under a hectare. Denser purple, the nose is hidden because this is going to be a long-term winner, not a sprinter. Really stylish with a density of dark fruit, some black cherries.”
Arnaud Mortet Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru 2018
$557.99
95-97 pts Vinous - The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru includes 25% whole-bunch fruit. It has a lovely blackberry and briar scented bouquet, the millerandage lending real intensity and the 70% new oak seamlessly integrated. The palate is wonderfully defined with a fine line of acidity, demonstrating more complexity and terroir expression than the Mazoyères and great sustain on the finish. Superb.
94-98 pts Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy – “Situated at the northern end (away from Mazoyères) on light soil with lots of stones. To compare with the Mazoyères: a similar fresh full purple. Tense dense deep fruit, the riper of the two, yes also with a little more tension despite the riper fruit. Beautiful finish. The approach is very different and I get the impression that Arnaud prefers this wine. If it does get the nod it is on the quality of the finish, but I love them both.”
