Maison la Berthaude Chateauneuf du Pape 2019 (label for illustration only. This is 2019)
Exclusive Sale $21.99 / Was Sale $24.99 - Beats Best US Price online by $8!!!
90-92 pts Jeb Dunnuck / 90 pts Wine Advocate
We've been in love with this wine for years now. And so have the critics, with continuous 91+ pt reviews from Wine Advocate, Jeb Dunnuck and Vinous. With the 2019 vintage, winemaker Xavier Rolin has hit yet another homerun. 90-92 pt Chateauneuf du Pape for $24.99? Did I meet up with Marty McFly and Doc? Is this 1990? Sigh… that would be kind of nice, since I would have hair again! Seriously, though… there is no better value in Chateauneuf!
So… here’s the secret… “Maison la Berthaude” is a label done for our friend Craig Baker. It is produced by Domaine Roger Perrin under the guidance of 5th generation winemaker/owner Xavier Rolin. This bottling is the same as the Domaine’s “Les Galets de la Berthaude,” an homage to the district of Chateauneuf where the vineyard is located (Berthaude) and the large round “pudding stones” (“galets”) that make the region so special. 76% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 4% Mourvedre, brought up entirely in tank, so all you get is pure fruit and terroir. Plush cherry flavors mingle with wild herbs and cracked black pepper, finishing with just enough tannins and minerality to balance it all out. Classic Chateauneuf at 1980's pricing!
The best part about the price is you don’t even need to wait to enjoy this baby! It is super sexy and approachable right now. Of course, it will improve with time in bottle, but it is going to be hard to keep your hands off. Compare at $55 and up - like Chapoutier's Bernardine 2019 with the same JD review for $65!!!
“A blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and the rest Mourvèdre, raised in stainless steel and concrete, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Maison La Berthaude Tradition reveals a healthy ruby/purple color as well as complex, traditional notes of blackberries, peppery garrigue, new saddle leather, and dried flowers. With medium to full-bodied richness, notable purity of fruit, and silky tannins, it’s a charming, balanced, outstanding Châteauneuf du Pape in the making." JD
"Leather-tinged red berries mark the nose of the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Tradition. Admirably concentrated, with a ripe, velvety feel and ample weight on the palate, this is a solid effort and already delicious, despite a gentle dusting of tannins on the finish." WA
