Marquis d’Angerville Volnay 1er Cru 2018
Sale $99.99 - 91-93 pts Vinous – “The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru, a blend of Les Pitures and Les Mitans, has a perfumed bouquet of very pure black cherry and wild strawberry aromas. The palate is defined by slightly chalky tannins. Quite poised and mineral driven, tapering slightly toward the finish but maintaining impressive focus and elegance. Superb.”
- 91-93 pts Wine Advocate – “As usual, the 2018 Volnay 1er Cru is blend of Les Pitures and Mitans. More reserved than the Pommard that preceded it, the wine unwinds slowly in the glass, revealing enticing aromas of rose petals, red berries, blood orange, raw cocoa and deep soil tones. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, charming and elegant, with lively acids and fine, chalky tannins.”
- 90-92 pts Burghound – “Here the nose is notably spicier if less earthy in character on the equally ripe though a bit more elegant aromas of various dark berries and violet hints. There is more restraint to the cooler and less powerful flavors that display only slightly more refinement before culminating in a solidly powerful and built-to-age finale.”
- 90-92 pts Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy – “A blend of Pitures and Mitans. Fine mid-crimson to purple in colour. This is leaner and more discreet than the village wine but with extra punch behind. Sweet cherry and raspberry fruit, especially at the back of the palate.”
Marquis d’Angerville Volnay Fremiets 1er Cru 2018
Sale $149.99
- 92-94 pts Wine Advocate – “The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiet unwinds in the glass with an incipiently complex bouquet mingling raspberries and blood orange with savory bass notes of woo smoke, loamy soil, espresso roast and raw cocoa. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and lively, with a deep and tight-knit core, bright acids and a long finish.”
- 91-93 pts Burghound – “An overtly ripe yet still reasonably fresh nose combines notes of liqueur-like black berry fruit with those of exuberantly spicy plum and floral scents. The super-sleek, intense and elegant medium weight flavors exude evident minerality on the lacy and refreshing finale that is both sappy and impressively long. This is ripe yet it remains very Volnay in character.”
- 91-93 pts Vinous – “The 2018 Volnay Fremiet 1er Cru, which underwent replanting up until 1999, has an appealing bouquet of wild strawberry, raspberry preserve and crushed stone aromas, touches of rose petal emerging with aeration. The palate is framed by fine-grained tannin, quite citric on the entry and one of the most Pommard-like of d’Angerville’s Volnays. This is an energetic, edgy Volnay thanks to the limestone soil here. I suspect it will age extremely well.”
- 91-93 pts Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy – “Glowing mid purple. First to be picked. Much shallower soil than Les Angles but the vines have reached maturity and have coped in 2018. Darker fruit on the palate with a velvet texture enlivened by the little saline/iodine touch at the back. Very good persistence, finesse here.”
Marquis d’Angerville Volnay Champans 1er Cru 2018
Sale $179.99
- 93-95 pts Vinous – “The 2018 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has an outgoing bouquet similar to the Taillepieds, albeit one with more intellectual weight and gravitas behind it. Black cherries, blueberry and light cassis aromas reveal crushed stone and undergrowth notes, all delivered with intensity and superb delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly firmer, stockier tannins than the Taillepieds, darker fruit and grainier texture toward the persistent finish. I see this has having real long-term potential. Excellent.”
- 92-94 pts Burghound – “This too is beautifully elegant with its ripe and pure aromas of essence of red cherry liqueur, violet and rose petal scents. The equally refined if a bit less mineral-inflected flavors possess excellent verve on the long and slightly less structured finish that also evidences a touch of warmth. This needs to develop more depth but the underlying material appears to be present for that to occur.”
- 92-94+ pts Wine Advocate – “Like the Taillpieds, the 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Champans is another of the more muscular, introverted wines in the cellar, exhibiting aromas of raspberries, rose petals, orange rind and dark chocolate, followed by a medium to full-bodied, concentrated and youthfully chewy palate that's amply endowed with ripe tannin and juicy acids. This is a fine Champans in the making, but as is almost invariably the case, it will demand some patience.”
- 91-95 pts Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy – “Magical depth of colour with a high-class dense fruit, and again a certain amount of oak. A little bit more muscle here with a pleasing and concentrated ripe dark fruit, but no hint at all of over-ripeness. Lovely fresh tingle at the finish.”
Marquis d’Angerville Volnay Clos des Ducs 1er Cru 2018
Sale $269.99
- 95-97 pts Vinous – “The 2018 Volnay Clos des Ducs 1er Cru, the famous 2.15-hectare monopole of the domaine, is matured in around 25% new oak, although Guillaume d’Angerville mentioned that he intends to use less new oak in the future. It has a very intense bouquet of raspberry preserve, kirsch, blood orange and sous-bois aromas, all displaying wonderful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fabulous density and complexity, offering brambly red fruit, blood orange, orange peel, suggestions of dark chocolate and, of course, wonderful mineral tension on the persistent finish, which fans out beautifully. This is an exceptionally fine Volnay that will age for 30–40 years.”
- 94-96 pts Wine Advocate – “The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs is a terrific wine in the making, unfurling in the glass with a complex bouquet of rose petals, ripe red berries, orange rind, raw cocoa, grilled squab and sweet soil tones. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and succulent, its vibrant core of fruit framed by fine, powdery tannins. The finish is long and perfumed.”
- 93-96 pts Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy – “Not the deepest of colours but perhaps the finest of bouquets. Magical concentration, yet exquisite finesse, a fresh thread with a slight orange blossom, this is complex and complete, needs taking time over. The least marked by the vintage. Excellent finish with a ripe yet beautifully balanced perfume.”
- 93-95 pts Burghound – “A distinctly cooler nose is composed by aromas of red currant, cherry and a broad array of spice and floral wisps. There is outstanding intensity to the racy, well-detailed and strikingly stony medium weight flavors that deliver superb persistence and even more minerality on the balanced and wonderfully refreshing finale. This is also very classy juice and should age well for years.”
