White Wines
You can mix and match on these first three whites for an extra deal
*Brundlmayer RIESLING Kamptaler Terrassen 2019 - Sale $24.99 / Mix six $21.99- 95 pts James Suckling – “A very tight, composed white, showing dried-apple, lemon and spiced-pear character with heather and honeysuckle. It’s full-bodied with lots of lively fruit and a vivid finish. Structured. Super wine at this quality level from one of the legends. From organically grown grapes.”
*Brundlmayer GRUNER VELTLINER Terrassen 2019 - Sale $24.99 / Mix six $21.99 - 93 pts James Suckling – “A tight, focused white with dried apple, honey and flint. Some stone, too. Full-bodied, creamy and minerally with dried mango and pear. So subtle and complex. From organically grown grapes.”
*Hiedler Gruner Veltliner Ried Thal 2019 - Sale $24.99 / Mix six $21.99 - 92 pts James Suckling – “A layered white with dried-apple, pear and flint character. Intense and focused. Solid and structured. Flinty.”
Gobelsburg Riesling Gobelsburger 2019 - Sale $16.99 – 90 pts James Suckling – “Sliced lemons and green apples with some steely undertones. Medium-bodied, tangy and bright. Lots of lime at the finish.”
Raymond Usseglio CDR Les Claux BLANC 2019 - Sale $19.99 – 92 pts Jeb Dunnuck – “Based on a blend of 40% each of Grenache Blanc and Roussanne, with the balance Clairette and Clairette Rose, the 2019 Côtes Du Rhône Les Claux Blanc is terrific, with a fresh, incredibly pure yet still textured style that will make it incredibly versatile on the dinner table. Notes of white peach, tart pineapple, white flowers, and honeysuckle give way to a medium-bodied, beautifully concentrated white that has an understated elegance, terrific balance, and a clean finish. It’s a seriously impressive white that’s going to keep for at least 3-5 years.”
Red Wines
Guillaume Gonnet Cote du Rhone Village “Le Hardi” 2018 – Buy a Case $11.99 / Six for $13.49 / Sale $14.99 – Stunning. Ridiculous Value. 80% Grenache, 20% Syrah. Often described as a “Baby Châteauneuf du Pape”, this wine is rich, complex, yet approachable. My largest Cote du Rhone purchase in five years. It is THAT good.
Gobelsburg Zweigelt 2018 – Buy six or more $12.99 / Sale $14.99 – 90 pts Wine Enthusiast - “Beautifully pure, poised and aromatic notes of tart, ripe red cherry beckon from the glass. The palate adds a little more flesh to them and makes the cherry fruit even more alluring in its purity and bright freshness. This is easy but elegant and totally seductive.”
Boulon Morgon 2018 – Sale $14.99 - Cru Beaujolais for $14.99? This offering from Domaine J. Boulon epitomizes everything that is great about Beaujolais… It’s inexpensive, easy drinking and about as “crowd-pleasing” as it gets, while retaining the complexity and nuance that only comes with true “Cru” Beaujolais. I’ve had plenty of other Beaujolais that cost twice as much that I didn’t like half as much! When you’re looking for that prototypical French café wine that’ll pair with just about any little appetizer/ tapas/ pintxos that you can imagine, this is the wine you’re looking for. 100% stainless steel fermentation and elevage, silky smooth, barely-perceptable tannins, ripe berries, juicy cherries…
Henri Latour Hautes Cotes de Beaune Rouge 2018 – Sale $19.99 - 100% barrel; 50 year average vines; 2-4 years old for 10 months. Grown at 350m with western exposition. Bright in color; red currant fruit and savory herbs, slight note of straw in the nose. Lots of fruit on the palate, cherry and currant, tree bark flavors fashioned in a easy, bright, fresh wine; good+ length with soil complexity on the finish. A real overachiever!
Raymond Usseglio CDR Les Claux ROUGE 2018 - Sale $19.99 – 92 pts Jeb Dunnuck – “Looking at the red version of this cuvee, the 2018 Côtes Du Rhône Les Claux offers a vivid ruby/purple color as well as classy notes of black raspberries, peppery garrigue, and spring flowers. Complex, medium-bodied, and seamless on the palate, it’s a thrilling Côtes du Rhône that delivers way more elegance and purity than you’d expect from a Côtes du Rhône. The winemaking at this estate is terrific, and this is well worth seeking out. Drink bottles over the coming 4-6 years.”
Domaine Collotte Marsannay Clos de Jeu 2017 – Sale $34.99 – 91 pts Wine Advocate – “Wafting from the glass with a lovely bouquet of raspberries, plums and cherries, Collotte's 2017 Marsannay Le Clos de Jeu is medium to full-bodied, velvety and enveloping, its nicely concentrated core of rich but sappy fruit framed by powdery tannins and succulent acids.”
Guillaume Gonnet Chateauneuf du Pape Bel Ami 2018 – Sale $34.99 / Buy 3 or more pay $31.99 – 92 pts Wine Advocate - This is a 50/50 split of Grenache and Syrah. The higher than normal proportion of Syrah adds a more pronounced “black fruit” character to the wine – blackberries and black cherries – that plays nicely with the red cherry and black pepper spice of the Grenache. Then, Guillaume ages in 4 different types of vessels to create a blend offering more than the sum of its parts - 30% pyramid shaped concrete vats, 30% wooden vats, 30% stainless steel, 10% demi muids (600L) barrels. In all, Bel Ami is a singularly elegant, beautiful Chateauneuf that is drinking wonderfully today, but will age for a decade or more. To pair? The winery suggests the following, and who am I to argue? Sounds delicious! “Provencal Daub, Coq au Vin, Magret de Canard (Duck), charcuterie such as parma ham, spicy sausage and a selection of cheeses, such as comté and beaufort.”
La Gravette de Certan Pomerol 2018 – Sale $74.99 – Not reviewed. An incredible buy from one of Pomerol’s top estates! This is the second wine from the famed Vieux Chateau Certan. The 2018 Gravette is on par with the 2016, which rated 95 pts from both Wine Advocate and Jeb Dunnuck. “the 2016 La Gravette de Certan has a deep garnet-purple color and features lovely redcurrants, black raspberries and black cherries notes with a beautiful floral background of lavender and rose hip tea plus suggestions of sandalwood, cinnamon stick and menthol. Medium-bodied, refreshing, elegant and beautifully seamless, it offers layers of perfumed red and black fruits with a satiny texture and very impressive length.” WA on the 2016 |
