“Powered by scents of pepper-studded smoked meat, mulberries and mocha, the 2016 Lieu-dit Malakoff Shiraz is a smooth, supple beauty. It's full-bodied without seeming overly rich, heavy or alcoholic, lined by silky, fine-grained tannins and showing impressive length on the finish. Yes, it's on the savory side of things, but that just provides a point of difference when it's tasted against many of its Australian peers." WA As I have discussed before, the irrepressible Michel Chapoutier hasn’t taken a standard approach to Australia. Famed for his Syrah wines from the cool Northern Rhone region of France, Chapoutier drove straight through the more famous, and hot, vineyards of Barossa and McLaren Vale and into the cool Pyrenees Hills in western Central Victoria. Here he found the Malakoff Vineyard, which offered a perfect exposure to the sun, essential for achieving ripeness in this region. It also offered a soil profile nearly identical to that of his beloved home in the Northern Rhone – perfect for imparting the grapes with rich mineral and earth characteristics that elevate the wine beyond a simple expression of fruit. Now, as the vines near 15 years in age, the true potential of the site is being revealed… so, let’s get on to the wine, shall we?
100% Syrah aged 12-18 months in French Oak barrels. Like his other wines, this is an expression in elegance and restraint – not exactly the buzzwords from Barossa! At 14% alcohol, they have plenty of body, but never veer out of control. The aromas are ridiculous – smoky, seductive violet and black currant wafts mingle with black cherry, blackberry and currant notes. Then you sip… oh, baby, what a sip! A velvety rich concoction of black fruit, spicy pepper, anise and kalamata envelope your senses. There is more than a passing resemblance to a great Hermitage here, yet still plenty of Aussie fruit.
Truly, this wine is special. It doesn't taste like Northern Rhone, but it doesn't quite taste like Australian Shiraz either. I feel like I have seen the future… and I love what I see! Whether you are a fan of traditional Aussie Shiraz or a fan of Northern Rhone, or simply a fan of red wine, this is not to be missed!
