Is it that good? Well... yeah! Aside from the 2013 vintage of the same wine, I cannot think of another sub-$15 I've enjoyed as much. There have been a handful over the years that we've sold that come close. But what I find particularly compelling about this offering is how pure the wine is. There isn't a bunch of new oak - actually there isn't any oak - that obscures the fruit. Often, oak is used to "bulk up" the flavors in a lighter Pinot. And yet, this is packed with flavor and complexity. How do they obtain such intense flavors, yet bottle this wine at less than 13% alc.? The secret lies in the vineyard. At 1300 meters above sea level, these are the highest vineyards in the region. With dramatic temperature swings, the grapes' skins become thicker than normal. Yet, with the intense UV light, the grapes can achieve full phenolic ripeness at a lower level of alchol. Translation? Serious bang for buck and a pure expression of Pinot Noir! Bright red fruits, predominantly raspberry, jump out of the glass with hints of cola, spice and earthy notes.
