It’s pronounced “TSVYE-gelt”.
I know… it doesn’t roll off the tongue like grapes from the “romance” languages. But, as Eric Asimov of the New York Times opined, when discussing Zweigelt, “It’s time to get over it. The pure pleasures available by being open to some of the less familiar Germanic wines are now too great to allow a little matter like language to stand in the way.”
Tell, ya what… I’ll give you a momentary reprieve from tying your tongue… Parent grape #1 is St. Laurent. Oooh… sounds French! Sexy! And it is! A relative of Pinot Noir, St. Laurent adds the sex appeal to Zweigelt, with its alluring bouquet of cherries and violets. Reprieve over… Parent grape #2 is Blaüfrankisch. (Yeah. Just move on.) Blau- what’s it called adds an intriguing spice note – not spicy, but spices, as in cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, etc.
What you really need to know is this… because pretty much all of America has trouble with the name, we are not exactly a target market for exports. So when I tasted this and placed an order from Austria, everyone was extremely willing to cut us a deal. After all, Zweigelt originated in Austria and is its most widely planted red grape. Just doing our part to represent!
The bottom line is this gem drinks like $25-35 Pinot Noir from Oregon or Burgundy… or Cru Beaujolais. As low as $14.99, it is a complete steal.
Look at it this way… with so many “easy” options to choose from, why would I go out on a limb and order a bunch of a wine I have never offered in an email before? Because it rocks!
“Beautifully pure, poised and aromatic notes of tart, ripe red cherry beckon from the glass. The palate adds a little more flesh to them and makes the cherry fruit even more alluring in its purity and bright freshness. This is easy but elegant and totally seductive.” WE
