Requests for more prompted a re-buy... the last we will see till Spring... and likely the last of this vintage... and at a lower price!!! The 2019 vintage wines from Austria are starting to arrive! Why so excited? According to people "in the know", "2019 is poised to be one of the best vintages in Austria in the last decade.Growers have compared it favorably to 1999, a historic vintage in Austria. From the wines we have tasted, it is a vintage that supports both Grüner Veltliner and Riesling equally, with a crisp structure, high ripeness, and great aromatic complexity. Each vintage has its own strength and it is quite rare to have a vintage like this, that seems to have produced excellent, ripe expressions of these complementary grape varieties." Simply put, YOU do not drink enough dry Riesling. Yes, YOU. All of you! Even those of you who buy cases of it…
Ok… snap out of it… I don’t want to lecture. The truth is, the German wine export machine has done more to harm a single grape than anyone else I can think of, save, of course, that infamous Sideways movie and its devastating impact on Merlot.
For decades, it was impressed upon the US wine-drinking public that Riesling was sweet. And German. Yet, travel to Germany and you may be hard-pressed to find a sweet option on the list! When in Rome… er Munich… you’ll be drinking DRY Riesling!
The 2019 Gobelsburger Riesling is positively radiant! This is BONE DRY, folks. Crunchy yellow peach, lime, barely-ripe apricot and a stony minerality lead the way, followed by a completely dry, zesty palate filled with tangy green apple and a prominent saline minerality. This is a sly little wine – deceptively simple at first – though as the wine opens up in the glass, there is a marked crescendo affect that takes place. Within just a few moments, this becomes gorgeous and nuanced, with a beautiful complexity of green plum, mineral, saffron, rosewater, and honeycomb."Sliced lemons and green apples with some steely undertones. Medium-bodied, tangy and bright. Lots of lime at the finish." JS
What to pair with? Ah… that is the beauty of Riesling! The tight-wire acidity and penetrating fruit make it a wonderful match with light fish… and also chicken and pork… oh, and rich charcuterie and cheeses… it truly is a magical choice for pairing as virtually nothing is a bad choice!
