This is a sensational buy in Nebbiolo, one of the best buys we’ve seen from Piemonte all year.
Barbaresco is all too often overshadowed by the wines of Barolo. But wines like this beauty deserve some recognition. A 96 point rated Barolo of equivalent quality would cost you more double the price, and unlike most current release Barolos this Barbaresco is drinking superbly now!

Barbaresco sits just 10 miles from Barolo, but has a slightly warmer climate, meaning the Nebbiolo grapes tend to ripen earlier leading to typically softer tannins. Less ageing is required by the Barbaresco DOCG too, two years versus three years in Barolo. I find the best Barbarescos (like this one) to have a lot of the depth and complexity of great Barolos, but with finer tannins and less oak influence. But don’t be fooled thinking this is “Barolo light” because these wines can age incredibly well, and just like great Barolos they’ll become even more intriguing as they do.
The Nada family have been grape growers in the region since 1900, but it wasn’t until 1964 that they first built a small winery and started to produce their own wine. Just in time too, the Barbaresco DOCG was established just two years later in 1966. The family farms 15 acres on the Casot hillside, near the town of Treiso. All farming is certified organic and the winemaking is natural, using native yeasts, letting the fruit shine. The first year of ageing takes place in a combination of tonneaux and botticelle (small barrels). Then its transferred into larger used Slavonian oak casks for its second year, before being bottled with only a very light fining and no filtration. The result is a strikingly pure expression Nebbiolo, gorgeous now, with the structure to age another decade. Don’t miss it.
“Perfumed, full bodied and elegant, this gorgeous wine has enticing scents of iris, fragrant woodland berry, aromatic herb and baking spice. Made with organic grapes, the delicious, structured palate delivers juicy black cherry, raspberry compote, licorice and crushed mint set against taut, refined tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced. Drink 2021–2029.“ – Kerin O’Keefe, Wine Enthusiast.
"This vintage is made with organic practices. The Nada Giuseppe 2017 Barbaresco Casot is a bright and expressive wine with aromas that flutter out of the glass. The 2017 vintage offers more intensity, and that's what you get with this wine from Treiso. There is a soft and silky side to Casot that adds to the easy and approachable side of this wine." WA
"Nada’s 2017 Barbaresco Casot is a very pretty wine that captures all the elegance that makes Barbaresco so alluring. Silky, aromatic and wonderfully nuanced, the 2017 floats on the palate with deceptive persistence for its mid-weight structure. Crushed flowers, sweet red berries, mint, cinnamon and a hint of orange peel linger. The 2017 is not a powerhouse, instead it impresses for its finesse and impeccable balance, neither of which was easy to achieve during this tricky growing season. In a word: impressive." Vinous
