In the heart of the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation lay the Premier Cru vineyards of Morgeot. In the middle of this expanse of vineyards, Chassagne's largest 1er Cru, sits what appears to be a house. This is, actually, the chapel remaining from the Morgeot Abbey, built by Cistercian monks around 1150. And it is here we find some of the most sought after 1er wines from the appellation - the climat of Abbaye de Morgeot. "Uh... because there is an old building here? Really" Yes, really. People will spend money on the darndest things. I'm kidding! No, the secret here is the incline here is much gentler than further up the hill, and the vines have a very slight aspect toward the southeast. The incline results in more evenly ripe grapes, while the orientation is just enough to provide some exposure to the morning sun and shade from the late afternoon sun. Grapes can ripen slowly and evenly in this mesoclimate, developing aromatically while retaining acidity.
The top wines, like Louis Jadot and Ch. de Santenay sell for about $110 a bottle. "Well, sure Todd. The TOP wines go for that much... but this is a different wine. What makes this such a "value"?"
Simple... this wine is every bit as good or better. Trust me. Or don't trust me... look at what the Wine Enthusiast had to say in the 2016 vintage, when it rated this wine 94 pts, equal to the Jadot and higher than the Santenay. At half the price, you can grab two bottles! And what about the 2018 vintage? Wine Advocate and Vinous rate 2018 as a better vintage.
So... in summary... 94+ pt quality Chassagne-Montrachet equal to those that sell for twice the price. Sign me up!
When I tasted, the wine exploded with aromas of apricot and spiced pear, giving way to a rich, pwerful wine. Fine acidity and minerality round out the wine and point to a long life ahead. "This full, rich wine is still young, but its toastiness, ripe apricot and pear flavors and intense spiciness all point to a good future. The wine has weight, ripe fruits and a tight texture. Drink from 2021." WE on the 2016.

Let’s take a trip, shall we? Virtually, of course, since we are heading to France! The quaint little town of Puligny-Montrachet, population 424, in the heart of Burgundy. We’re staying at the Hotel la Chouette. Cute room, eh?
It’s warm and sunny this afternoon… perfect for a little walk… head into town… hang a left at the monument, then pop into Boulangerie Maison Perrone and grab a few pastries for an afternoon snack! Meandering through and out of town… right on Rue Drouhin and just follow that out into the vineyards. I assume you grabbed a bottle of wine from one of the wineries we walked past?
Ahh… here we are… less than a mile walk from the hotel. Breath in that fresh country air! Not exactly a busy road… let’s plop on down in the grass and have a glass.

So, why here? Well… to your left is the 1er Cru vineyard of Les Perrieres. To the right is the Les Nosroyes vineyard. Hard to tell the difference, isn’t it? Okay, here’s how you tell: when you put the grapes from the left in a bottle, it sells for $100-120+. The grapes from the right, all bottled up, will set you back $70-80.
That’s an expensive 10 feet!

This is another alternate label from our friend Craig Baker… Domaine Jean Fery is the proper estate. Their labeled version of this wine? $78.50 is the average price online for the 2018. We beat that by $23.50 per bottle!!!
100% barrel fermented, 30% new oak. This section of Puligny has a more southern exposition than most of Puligny which allows for a bit more ripeness. Here we have a powerful & high-toned nose of lemon oil, almond paste, crisp green apple, crushed chalk and a subtle framing of oak vanillin. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with excellent concentration, racy acids that showcase ripe orchard fruits and spicy vanilla oak braced by deep calcaire mineral tension through the finish.
