Andis is a fairly new winery set in the heart of Amador County, surrounded by ancient Zinfandel and Primitivo vines. “Primitivo? Isn’t that the same thing?” Why yes, they are. Then.. uh… why call it Primitivo? I have no idea!
Boy, that seems to be a familiar theme lately… Why? No idea…
What I do know is this wine is ridiculously good for the $. It starts with the luscious fruit from 100+ yr-old vines, harvested and them fermented under the direction of winemakers extraordinaire Phillipe Melka and Maayan Koschitzky, who have such lustrous wineries as Screaming Eagle and Dalla Valle on their resume!
And here they are making $25 Zinfandel? Yeah… you think it’s good? Well, it is. Stunning. For $13.99? Ridiculous.
"This well-balanced, layered and seamless wine offers tons of fresh blackberry and raspberry flavors wrapped in a bracing texture of fine-grained tannins. Good acidity and a great sense of focus add to its charms. Interestingly, it is made from 50% Zinfandel, 30% Primitivo (the Italian strain of Zinfandel), 10% Petite Sirah and 10% Barbera." WE
“This elegant blend of 80% Zinfandel, 10% Petite Sirah, and 10% Barbera speaks to the constrained power of all four varieties. Saturated in plum and heather, it’s lushly textured on the palate, where a keen dash of white pepper adds a slight dryness to the long, blue fruit-filled finish.. TP
