Why the crazy deal? Simple... Todd knows his Spanish wines and has connections everywhere. The property making these wines is kncoking it out of the park... we sold another of theirs and crushed... so the Spanish distributor/ US Importer sent him a sample of this one. He bought two pallets on the spot to seal the deal. (112 cases!)
Tragolargo translates as “Big Gulp”, which to most Americans invokes images of the super-sized cups from 7-11s. Normally, that word association might raise an eyebrow, but once I had a taste of this wine I wished I had a comically oversized 44-ounce vessel to drink this bad boy out of!
So what makes this wine so incredible drinkable? I’d credit two things. First, after a cold soak, a third of the grapes go through carbonic maceration- a fermentation technique often used in Beaujolais that results in lighter and fruitier wines. Second, instead of the usual oak barrel aging, the Tragolargo spends just 4 months in clay amphorae, meaning that this isn’t as weighed down as some of it’s Monastrell counterparts. Put it all together- we’ve got a unique expression of Monastrell that is perfect for popping and pouring.
Oh, and I should mention, it tastes pretty dang good too! It’s all the big berry and cherry I expect form Monastrell, with this juicy streak of acidity underneath that enhances the drinkability and highlights each distinct fruit note. There’s beautifully elegant tannins and a lovely spice note that makes it all the more enjoyable. This is the exact wine I want when I get off work and there’s a little bit of sun left to sit out on the porch with.
Pairings? I don’t know… a pitcher?
I’d say burgers or probably the best way to go, anything off the grill, really. The sun is coming out this weekend, so grab a bottle and bust out the Weber!
“The lightish and drinkable Monastrell 2019 Tragolargo is young and fruit-driven with varietal character, fine tannins and a slight rusticity in the palate that calls for food. It fermented with part full clusters from organically farmed and certified vineyards in Casa Balaguer and was bottled unoaked and without any added sulfur, yet the wine is clean, precise and expressive.”-WA
