Marc Besnardeau is from Paris originally and before he met Mireille Farjon, he was a sommelier at one of the better restaurants in Paris (in the Montmartre section). In marrying her he not only moved, but also made the complete change from the city life to the life of a vigneron. His fine palate as a sommelier, however, put him in good stead for evaluating wine and making his own. Since 1994, Marc has been perfecting his craft, having risen to status as one of the top producers in Cairanne. A hefty dose of Mourvedre and Syrah give this baby more heft than you might expect from a Cotes du Rhone.

50% Grenache, 35% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah. “I was blown away by the 2017 Cairanne Maximilien, which might be the finest vintage to date for this cuvée. Sporting a saturated purple color as well as blockbuster notes of ripe black fruits, new leather, crushed rocks, and violets, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, integrated acidity, flawless balance, and a great, great finish. Based on a tank aged blend of 50% Grenache, 35% Mourvèdre, and the rest Syrah, don’t miss a chance to latch onto a few bottles of this beauty.
