For over 30 years, Don Melchor has set the standard for Chilean wine. With the 2018 vintage, considered Chile’s finest in the modern winemaking era, Don Melchor is making a case to be considered among the finest Cabernet Sauvignon in the world. Considering it compares in quality with the best Bordeaux, it is a steal for the price.
“Don Melchor is as distinctive as it is powerful, with rich, earthy aromas and flavors of dried red fruits, cedar and spice reflecting a remarkable combination of Bordeaux-style finesse and fruit-driven purity. Its consistently elegant profile is supported by succulent tannins and firm acidity, giving it the stuffing to age and gain complexity. Don Melchor’s one of the world’s great collectible Cabernets.” Wine Spectator
“For many Chilean producers, 2018 was one of the best years of the decade. And winemaker Enrique Tirado agrees. A season that was cooler than the very warm 2017, with close-to-normal rainfall (some 340 millimeters) and temperatures with fewer spikes, can sum up an ideal year for the ripening of this Maipo classic. This year, the blend is based—as usual—on cabernet sauvignon with 91%, plus 5% cabernet franc, 3% merlot, and the rest is petit verdot, all from the alluvial soils of the old Tocornal estate, where the Andean foothills begin in the Alto Maipo. Consistent with expectations, the 2018 Don Melchor is one of the best—if not the best—we have tasted in Descorchados. It has the layer of ripeness that Tirado has imposed on the wine since he took charge of this icon in 1997, but it also has the tension of a cooler year, expressed in acidity, of course, but also in firm tannins that latch on to the palate. It's rich in ripe red fruits, but there are also notes of herbs and mint, and on the palate, all that, plus the classic earthy tone of Alto Maipo cabernets. And the flavors are long, giving this Melchor delicious depth. An excellent show of place, with a tremendous sense of origin.” Guia Descorchados
“This is amazing. The vibrancy and energy in this wine is stunning. The complexity of aromas are breathtaking with flowers, blackcurrants, raspberries and peaches. Full-bodied, yet ever so refined and polished with impeccable texture and beauty. The length is marvelous. This is a testimony to balance, harmony and transparency in a great red.” JS
““Chile’s exceptional harvest in 2018 is confirmed in this red blend composed of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5%, Cabernet Franc, 3% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, and aged for 15 months in French oak barrels, 72% of which are new and 28% second use. It presents black current and blueberry accompanied by floral, herbal and spiced notes, as well as earthy tones. Benefiting from a cooler year in comparison to the hot temperatures of 2017, it has a refreshing acidity and extremely fine tannins, which provide substance to the blend and balance out the customarily ripe profile found in this classic fruit from Puente Alto. It has a long-lasting, vertical and dense finish, with a touch of licorice and graphite. The more precise and refined version of this wine is among the best, if not the best vintage tasted up to now.”” Adega
