Over the past year, we have sold more bottles of Spanish red wine than any other sub-category - more than Rhone, US Cabernet, US Pinot Noir, Tuscany... you name it! So I know y'all like the stuff! Which put a little extra pressure on putting together this case. Not only do I have to deliver great wines, I have to deliver a great deal! Wines? Check. Deal? How's $167.99 for a case sound? That's just $13.99 per bottle and a 25% savings of suggested retail price. Cases are evenly mixed with 3 bottles of each wine. Cases will be available when we reopen Thursday at both stores. Enrique Mendoza la Tremenda 2018 – 92 pts Wine Advocate – Of the 6,450 Spanish Reds reviewed by the Wine Advocate over the past five vintages, this is one of only FOUR wines to merit 92+ pts and sell for under $15!!! The other three were previus vintages of this same wine!
100% Monastrell from Alicante. The aromas hit you before the wine finishes pouring into the glass – just exploding with bright cherry, plum and black raspberry notes. A juicy explosion of vibrant fruit melds together with hints of cracked black pepper and a delicate floral note all pulled back together by fine tannins on the finish. Food? Well, this is everyday wine for everyday food – a la American dishes like burgers, pizza, chili are easy options. Feeling a bit Spanish tonight? Try one of my favorites from the region – revuelto: eggs scrambled with beans, garlic onions and ham. Man, the Spanish love their eggs, and so do I! Not just for breakfast, folks! Or, try Chuletas al ajo cabañil… lamb chops with garlic! Or paella… with snails and rabbit! Click on the pic for a recipe
Casar de Burbia Bierzo 2018 – 91 pts James Suckling / 90 pts Penin Guide – 100% Mencia from Bierzo. What's Mencia, then? Think great red Burgundy, mixed with top-notch Oregon Pinot, with a dash of Cabernet Franc... this wine has it all - fruit, earth, subtlety and nuance, yet expressive and accessible... Particularly compelling to me is the way in which this wine balances the earthy nuances often found in the grape with the juicy, succulent fruit resulting from modern viticultural know-how. The nose is positively beguiling, offering notes of cherries, strawberries and raspberry along with wild herbs and a hint of star anise. To balance the lush fruit, there is a hint of oak, along with vibrant acidity and fine tannins. If you haven’t gotten on the Mencia bandwagon, there is still plenty of room! The seats are super comfy, too! Compare with similarly-weighted wines at double the price, like Pinot Noir or Rhone blends. I’ve enjoyed this wine with all kinds of foods, roast chicken, tuna, salmon, lamb, burgers, the options are endless. It’s just such a fabulously balanced and food friendly wine!

Bodegas Breca Old Vine Garnacha 2017 – 93 pts Jeb Dunnuck / 91 pts Wine Spectator - So we have Garnacha in it’s true native home- the extreme altitudes and temperature fluctuations where sweltering days build up the ripeness while cool nights allow for bright acidity to develop. A variety of soil types give it a mineral complexity, while the steep slopes allow for exceptional sun exposure. Everything is dry farmed and head trained, to allow the grapes to experience just the right amount of stress that give it an exceptional complexity and aging potential. The vines here range from 25- 95 years old, and combined with 18 months in oak, provide an exceptionally robust flavor and texture.
And when I say robust flavor- I mean capital-F Flavor! Breca is ludicrously, criminally fruit driven. Dark bramble fruit and berry swirl with plum notes and spice. Irresistible chocolate and pepper waft from the glass with hints of vanilla swirling throughout. I was floored- literally had to sit down and take it all in. Don’t think this isn’t drinkable, though. Just because it made me think about it didn’t mean the bottle didn’t vanish.
There are a plethora of viable pairing options, but I’ll tell you- the second I had a sip of this I was kicking myself for not having made a molé. This wine loves richness, and that combination of sweet, spicy, and smoky would be absolutely perfect. Click on the pic for my personal favorite recipe.
Torremoron Ribera del Duero 2019 – 90 pts Vinous - 100% Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero… at this price?!?! Torremorón is made by the small village of Quintanamanvirgo, well situated in the north central area of Ribera. I say made by the village, and not a winery, because there are only two businesses in this booming village of 94 people – the bar and the winery! (Yes, 94 people!) And nearly everyone works for the winery (and drinks at the bar!).
80-100 years old, the vines' naturally low yield (5 or 6 bunches per vine) results in concentrated, complex juice. The people of the village contribute as well, taking care to harvest the grapes at night, when the temperature is cool and the grapes have their highest acidity. Not uncommon for white wines (especially in New Zealand), this approach is almost unheard of for red. But it is critical for the balance of the wine, as the acidity provides a crisp counterpoint to the juicy, ripe cherry and blackberry fruit.
To top it all off, the wine is aged entirely in stainless steel, making Torremorón one of the most pure expressions of Tempranillo that you’ll come across! Thanks to the lack of oak, you can spice things up when pairing with this wine - Thai beef salad, marinated Korean BBQ pork, Peking duck and meat or chicken dishes with a piquant play of spices
