This is the big brother of the Burbia we offered in our Spanish Case recently.... we scored a sweet deal because apparently, we are one of the largest sellers of Mencia in the country... heck, the Spanish negociant says we move more than any retailer in Bierzo itself!

If you are a seasoned Mencia drinker, let me just say this… this is THE winery to watch. The Hombros is rated higher than our top-selling Raul Perez Ultreia St. Jacques! Stylistically, it has less earthiness and more pure fruit at its core… it’s flipping delicious. If you like St. Jacques, you will love this!

For Mencia newbies… What's Mencia, then? Think great red Burgundy, mixed with top-notch Oregon Pinot, with a dash of Cabernet Franc... this wine has it all - fruit, earth, subtlety and nuance, yet expressive and accessible... Particularly compelling to me is the way in which this wine balances the earthy nuances often found in the grape with the juicy, succulent fruit resulting from modern viticultural know-how.  The nose is positively beguiling, offering notes of cherries, strawberries and raspberry along with wild herbs and a hint of star anise. To balance the lush fruit, there is a hint of oak, along with vibrant acidity and fine tannins. If you haven’t gotten on the Mencia bandwagon, there is still plenty of room! The seats are super comfy, too! Compare with similarly-weighted wines at double the price, like Pinot Noir or Rhone blends. I’ve enjoyed this wine with all kinds of foods, roast chicken, tuna, salmon, lamb, burgers, the options are endless. It’s just such a fabulously balanced and food friendly wine!
