91 pts Jeb Dunnuck
I offered this back in October, before it was reviewed, with the implicit request to trust me. Well, whether you did or didn't, Mr. Dunnuck has now weighed in, with a rocking 91 pt review... I managed to scrape up everything left at the distributor... want some?
From 50-70 year-old, sustainably and organically-tended vines, hand-harvested... and... wait, check that price again... wow. The old vines make for intensely concentrated and complex fruit, combined with a clean, pure expression thanks to meticulous hand-harvesting. The organic part? Just helps you sleep at night, knowing the earth is being cared for.
85% Tempranillo, 15% Graciano aged 10 months in a combination of French and American oak, new and used. I love the addition of the Graciano. It adds a brightness and an intense spicy, floral perfume that rounds out the sweet cherry and raspberry fruit of the Tempranillo. There’s just the right amount of oomph here to let this baby stand up to meats off the grill, especially sausages – chorizo, longaniza, morcilla, salchicha… hmmm…
“A blend of 85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano, the 2017 Vinas Viejas gives up a clean, classic bouquet of blackberries, graphite, violets, and cedary herbs. With medium-bodied richness, notable elegance, and ripe tannins, it’s another smoking value in Eric Solomon’s portfolio.” JD
"A spectacular wine assembled by Eric Solomon, Rafael De Haan and Miguel Angel Rodriguez, the 2012 Hazana Vinas Viejas is made from 45- to 70-year-old bush vines (85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano). Aged 12 months in French and American oak, it is difficult to believe a wine such as this could be available for under $35-40 a bottle, but here it is. A dense ruby/purple color is followed by aromas of lead pencil shavings, black currants, spice box, cedar and a touch of vanilla. Deep, medium to full-bodied and elegant yet suave, savory and expansive, this beautiful red is a perfect synthesis of the traditional and more progressive style of Rioja. Drink it now or cellar it for another 4-5 years." WA on 2012
